On the Aug. 26, 2002 edition of Raw, Brock Lesnar and his manager Paul Heyman opened the program with a gloating victory address to the New York City crowd, one night after Lesnar won his first WWE Championship at SummerSlam. At just 25 years old, the behemoth who Heyman dubbed "The Next Big Thing" defeated The Rock to become the youngest WWE Champion of all time ? a record that Brock was especially proud of. "I'm the youngest WWE Undisputed Champion in history," Lesnar cockily exclaimed to the WWE Universe. "I'm the youngest ever! And nobody ? nobody! ? can beat me!"

Triple H had something to say about that.

The King of Kings, dressed in disguise as HBK after viciously injuring him at SummerSlam, was quick to remind Brock (or as he called him, "boy") that Triple H had softened The Rock up the previous week on Raw in a No Disqualification Match. Claiming that Brock owed him, The Cerebral Assassin engaged in a heated staredown with the new WWE Champion and posed that all-too-familiar question: "Are you man enough to play The Game?"

With Triple H and Brock face to face and ready to throw down, The Undertaker joined the fray and told The Game that it washewho gets "first crack at the young blood." There was only one real way to settle this dispute over No. 1 contendership: a one-on-one battle in Raw's main event.

Who did Brock want to face in his first title defense? The answer became crystal clear when Lesnar interfered in the No. 1 Contender's Match and bludgeoned The Phenom with his WWE Title, allowing The King of Kings to get the pinfall and claim an opportunity to face Brock for the championship gold.

That's the closest the WWE Universe would ever be to watching The Next Big Thing try to play The Game. As the show came to a close, SmackDown General Manager Stephanie McMahon made a surprise appearance to tell Raw GM Eric Bischoff that she pays Brock "a whole lot of money to be exclusive to SmackDown," thereby nullifying Raw's No. 1 contender. Even though Lesnar was the WWE Undisputed Champion, Stephanie added that doesn't mean both brands have to feature him and it was the "champion's prerogative" which program he competes on.?(WATCH)

Triple H would never get his one-on-one matchup with Lesnar, but you can bet these intense competitors have probably savored the thought of clashing in the ring all these years. Therefore, it shouldn't come as a total shock that the WWE COO was brutally attacked when he tried to put Brock in his place back in April, reigniting their decade-old conflict. After all, he was the one who was so quick to rain on Lesnar's parade as soon as he made history as a 25-year-old WWE Champion.

Now, the two titans will finally collide at SummerSlam on Aug. 19, live on pay-per-view. It won't be for the WWE Title this time around, but the weight of their personal grudge feels far heavier than any piece of championship gold.

Iran holds Syria conference, pushes for peace talks

Iran on Thursday backed moves to start peace talks between the Syrian regime and opposition groups as it hosted a 29-nation conference on the conflict gripping its key ally.

Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi told reporters after the meeting that "a major part of the opposition has announced that it is ready to negotiate with the Syrian government in Tehran without any preconditions."

But there was no confirmation from the Syrian opposition, which, like Syria's government, did not attend the Tehran conference.

Salehi offered few other details about the initiative, other than that Iran would coordinate soon with Syria's government on how to move forward.

Thursday's four-hour meeting gathered several countries, notably Russia, China, Cuba, Iraq and Venezuela, that are friendly to Iran. Others included Afghanistan, Algeria, India, Indonesia, Pakistan and Zimbabwe.

Most of the nations that took part were represented by ambassadors residing in Tehran, not foreign ministers.

Countries that Iran has accused of arming the Syrian opposition -- the United States and its European allies, Turkey, Saudi Arabia and Qatar -- were excluded.

The participants expressed "serious concern over the continuation of clashes and violation of human rights in Syria" and rejected any foreign intervention, Salehi said.

He added that the discussions focused on a ceasefire for Syria, humanitarian aid, and preparing the ground for national dialogue.

The meeting agreed to establish a contact group on Syria that would hold another meeting at a time and place to be notified, he said.

Iran offered no change in its stalwart support for the regime of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

Instead Salehi indicated that Tehran intended any Syrian national dialogue to focus on furthering political reforms Assad had promised, but which the opposition seeking his ouster has dismissed as insincere and meaningless.

"We want them (the opposition) to sit down with the Syrian government and cooperate so that the implementation of the reforms can be hastened and help the violence stop," Salehi said.

He also warned that Western nations backing Syria's rebels risked stoking "extremism" and repeating "the same error" as in Afghanistan, where US and NATO troops have struggled against a tenacious Taliban enemy.

"It is an error to think that by keeping up pressure that the Syrian regime will change," he said.

Salehi said Tehran had been in contact with some Syrian opposition factions over the past year but he did not say which one was ready to negotiate with the Syrian government.

On Tuesday, a top aide to Iran's supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei flew to Damascus to assure Assad that Tehran would not let their anti-Israel alliance collapse.

"Iran will never allow the resistance axis -- of which Syria is an essential pillar -- to break," said the envoy, Saeed Jalili.

The US ambassador to the United Nations, Susan Rice, in an NBC television interview on Thursday accused Iran of playing a "nefarious" role in the Syria conflict and said its "axis of resistance" was "bad for the region."

She also said the "momentum is shifting clearly in favour of the opposition."

The United States and Russia, in particular, differ on how to tackle the Syrian conflict, stalling any UN action. Moscow and Beijing have vetoed three attempts within the Council to sanction Assad's regime, earning US opprobrium.

Chevron's California refinery fire contained, not out yet

RICHMOND/HOUSTON (Reuters) - A massive fire struck at the core of Chevron Corp's large Richmond, California, refinery on Monday, spewing flames and a column of smoke into the air, threatening a prolonged outage that may increase prices of the costliest U.S. gasoline.

The fire was contained, but not extinguished, according to the company. The fire has blazed for hours after it erupted at the refinery in a densely populated industrial suburb of San Francisco. Smoke could be seen billowing over the Bay Area and four train stations were shut.

Nearby residents were ordered indoors after the fire hit the sole crude unit at the 245,000 barrel per day (bpd) plant, which accounts for one-eighth of California state's refining capacity. About 200 people have sought medical help, complaining of respiratory problems, the San Pablo, California-based Doctors Medical Center said in a statement.

The fire had started in the No. 4 crude unit, the only one at the plant, at 6:15 p.m. shortly after a leak was discovered, Chevron said. As the leak grew, workers were evacuated, plant manager Nigel Hearn told journalists at the site. He said some units were still operating, but gave no details.

It was not immediately clear when the fire would be put out and the extent of damage to the plant was not known.

"I walked outside and saw what looked like a lot of steam coming out of Chevron, way more than usual. I thought they must have blown a boiler," said Ryan Lackay, a 45-year-old employee at a chemical plant next door to the refinery.

"And then all of a sudden it just went whoosh, it ignited."

Crude distillation units (CDUs) break down oil into feedstock for other units in a refinery. It can take months to repair a CDU at a large plant, during which operations are typically severely limited.

Any lengthy disruption in production could affect the supply of fuel in the West Coast, particularly gasoline, due to the difficulty in meeting California's super-clean specifications. The region also has few immediate alternative supply sources.

"Chevron will have a hard time finding replacement barrels in an already short market," said Bob van der Valk, a petroleum industry analyst in Terry, Montana.

"Refineries are already drawing down summer blend inventory in anticipation of the switch back to winter blend gasoline."

TOWERING FLAMES, BLACK SMOKE

Residents of Richmond were advised to "shelter in place", an order often given during refinery accidents to shield against possible exposure to toxic chemicals or smoke. Sulfuric acid and nitrogen dioxide were released during the incident, according to a filing with the California Emergency Management Agency.

The refinery, the third largest in California and among the oldest in the country, is key to the economy of Richmond, a declining industrial city. But it has stirred controversy among local residents concerned about the environmental impacts and local politicians often seeking more tax revenues.

"I looked out the window and saw 40 foot flames and black smoke," Marc Mowrey, a Point Richmond resident who lives about a mile from the plant, said in a telephone interview.

He said the smell was not exceptional or very different from other days, but a huge plume of smoke was sitting over Richmond and neighboring El Cerrito.

Chevron said in a statement that there had been only one minor injury at the refinery, which at its peak 10 years ago employed over 1,300 people on a site of over 2,900 acres.

Last week, the refinery reported vapor leaks and a compressor failure to California pollution regulators, according to notices. The notices did not say which units were involved.

We are "very disappointed that this happened, and apologize that we are inconveniencing our neighbors," Chevron spokesman Walt Gill told local television.

A Reuters reporter who lives nearby said he heard some loud bangs and a siren as the fire erupted, but a Chevron spokesman denied reports of an explosion.

It is common to shut down the entire plant in the event of a major blaze. A February 17 fire at the CDU of BP Plc's 225,000 bpd Cherry Point, Washington, refinery led to a three-month shutdown and sent the regional price premium to more than $1 a gallon in some places.
