Use Facebook to send a postcard

Touchnote

By Suzanne Choney

Many of us don't send postcards anymore. Between text messaging and Facebook, if we want someone to know we're having a good time or wished they were there, it's covered. Still, just as Instagram is hugely popular for the retro look it gives to photos, sending postcards via Facebook (which is in the process of acquiring Instagram) may turn out to be more than a novel notion.

Facebook is testing a new ?Mail A Postcard? feature that lets users pick one of their photos and have Facebook send it to a friend as a postcard. No final price has been set yet, a spokeperson said. But one that's being bandied about is 99 cents. The social network is doing that in partnership with Sincerely, which makes Postagram. That program lets you send your Instagram photos as a postcard.

Here's how the back of the Facebook postcard would look.

There's also a Facebook app called Touchnote that has a Olympics-related promotion going, sponsored by Samsung, that will let you send free postcards through Sept. 9 (the end of the Paralympics).

The card "will have a small amount of Samsung branding on them," says Touchnote, and if you don't want that, you can pay the regular cost of $1.49 per postcard.

With Touchnote, you don't have to know the address of your Facebook friend ? which is good, because most of us probably don't know the addresses of a lot of our Facebook "friends."

"We've had over 750,000 cards ordered since the offer began just before the Olympic games started," Touchnote founder Raam Thakrar said in an email to TODAY.com.

Here's how the back of a regular Touchnote postcard looks.

The London-based company's app is also available as a stand-alone app for the iPhone, iPad and Android phones and tablets. But the free postcard offer is only valid via Facebook.

Touchnote will find the recipient's address for you, and promises it won't share your address or personal details with the recipient. While that gets privacy props, it seems a little odd considering you're taking the time and trouble to send a postcard to a friend. Oh, but that's right ? it is a Facebook friend.?

When five teenagers struck a goofy pose for a group photo in 1982, they never expected that 30 years later they would be sitting in the same spot making the same face. The friends, now in their late 40s, talk about why they made a pact to take the same picture again and again.

A GPS in your DNA

ScienceDaily (Aug. 16, 2012) ? While your DNA is unique, it also tells the tale of your family line. It carries the genetic history of your ancestors down through the generations. Now, says a Tel Aviv University researcher, it's also possible to use it as a map to your family's past.

Prof. Eran Halperin of TAU's Blavatnik School of Computer Science and Department of Molecular Microbiology and Biotechnology, along with a group of researchers from University of California, Los Angeles, are giving new meaning to the term "genetic mapping." Using a probabilistic model of genetic traits for every coordinate on the globe, the researchers have developed a method for determining more precisely the geographical location of a person's ancestral origins.

The new method is able to pinpoint more specific locations for an individual's ancestors, for example placing an individual's father in Paris and mother in Barcelona. Previous methods would "split the difference" and place this origin inaccurately at a site between those two cities, such as Lyon.

Published in the journal Nature Genetics, this method has the potential to reveal the ancestry, origins, and migration patterns of many different human and animal populations. It could also be a new model for learning about the genome.

Points of origin

There are points in the human genome called SNPs that are manifested differently in each individual, explains Prof. Halperin. These points mutated sometime in the past and the mutation was then passed to a large part of the population in a particular geographic region. The probability of a person possessing these mutations today varies depending on the geographical location of those early ancestors.

"We wanted to ask, for example, about the probability of having the genetic mutation 'A' in a particular position on the genome based on geographical coordinates," he says. When you look at many of these positions together in a bigger picture, it's possible to group populations with the same mutation by point of origin.

To test their method, Prof. Halperin and his fellow researchers studied DNA samples from 1,157 people from across Europe. Using a probabilistic mathematical algorithm based on mutations in the genome, they were able to accurately determine their ancestral point or points of origin using only DNA data and the new mathematical model, unravelling genetic information to ascertain two separate points on the map for the mother and father. The researchers hope to extend this model to identify the origins of grandparents, great-grandparents, and so on.

The new method could provide information that has applications in population genetic studies -- to study a disease that impacts a particular group, for example. Researchers can track changes in different genomic traits across a map, such as the tendency for southern Europeans to have a mutation in a gene that causes lactose intolerance, a mutation missing from that gene in northern Europeans.

A closer look at migration

The researchers believe that their model could have also relevance for the animal kingdom, tracking the movement of animal populations. "In principle, you could figure out where the animals have migrated from, and as a result learn about habitat changes due to historical climate change or other factors," says Prof. Halperin.

When it came time for Hall Middle School student Kenyamarie Mahone to write a creative essay on the topic, ?Why I am Glad that America is a Nation of Immigrants,? she put herself in the shoes of an immigrant.

Kenyamarie, 11, of Corte Madera, decided to pen imaginary diary entries of a young girl during World War II and the Holocaust.

?I tried to make it feel like you were her going through that situation and what it would feel like if you had to move and how great America is because it?s so diverse,? Kenyamarie said.

Her story took third place among more than 350 entries in the Celebrate America Creative Writing Contest, a competition for fifth-graders sponsored by the American Immigration Lawyers Association. She will read her essay Wednesday morning during a naturalization ceremony for some 1,200 new U.S. citizens at Oakland?s Paramount Theater.

?It?s compelling when someone can empathize with someone at an important moment in history,? said Tala Hartsough, director of the creative writing contest and member of the lawyers association. ?Her essay reflects the reasons that people move place to place in the world.?

The essays are screened by two rounds of volunteer groups that include lawyers, paralegals and legal assistants, before being judged by a panel of 20 celebrity judges, which this year included Rep. Nancy Pelosi as well as Marin County Superintendent of Schools Mary Jane Burke.

?It?s inspiration, because it speaks directly to the experience of the audience of 1,200 people who had the experience of immigrating to the United States,? said Sharon Rummery, public affairs officer for U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services.

Kenyamarie?s imaginary diary entries describe the journey of a young girl and her sister from Nazi Germany to Chinatown, where their fear of the unknown turns into appreciation of how diverse and welcoming their new home is.

She said she looks forward to speaking in front of a large audience of immigrants.

?I think about all the different places they probably come from,? she said. ?I want to show that America is a great country because everyone is from different places. It doesn?t really matter where you?re from in America because there are so many different types of people.?

Kenyamarie attributes her interest in writing to her father, Ken Mahone, a published novelist. In addition to inspiring his daughter to write, he said he encourages thoughtful writing in both of his daughters through a unique system of discipline; whenever they face serious punishment, the Mahone daughters must write a 10-page essay.

?It?s almost a welcoming that (Kenyamarie) gets to write a story because she likes to write, she likes to research,? Mahone said. ?She?s very eager to do it, almost too eager sometimes.?

Kenyamarie said her essay not only explored the immigrant experience, but helped open her eyes to diversity in her own community.

?After I wrote the story, I noticed that so many different people live just where I live in Corte Madera and how lucky we are to be able to have different people and different cultures,? she said.

? Adjusted heart rate operate
? Actual boxing procedures

The usual workout consists in the age-adjusted heart rate work Nike Air Max starting with 10 minutes for beginners and leading up to 20 minutes for your more advanced. For your second part from the exercise, youll need to perform and practice 20 minutes of actual boxing tactics.

Cardiovascular

The top way to measure the effects of an physical exercise program on your body is to check your pulse.

The easiest way to check the pulse is to place your index and middle fingers on your carotid artery or the wrist. Immediately after the workout, count your pulse for 15 seconds and multiply by 4.

You can also check your pulse during the exercise but with safety as a first priority. To get a more precise reading of your pulse rate, purchase an electronic device from any sports store.

Now you have your exercising pulse rate or heartbeats per minute. Nike Air Max Well be concentrating at the upper end of your pulse region: the 50% ? 70% ranges.

To figure this out, deduct your age from 220. Suppose your age is 40, deduct this from 220 and you get 180.

50% of 180 is 90 beats a minute,
60% of 180 is 108 beats a minute,
70% of 180 is 126 beats a minute and so on.

Dont jump into 70% operate straight away. Start with 50% and slowly operate your way up towards the 70% upper limit.

Start with no more than 10 minutes, and do the job up to 20 minutes. Once youre comfortable with working out for 20 minutes at 70% then try to increase the heart rate up to 80%.

Mix up your cardiovascular actions in the gym. Use the treadmill, skipping, rower, climber, and bike and other equipment that might be available to you.

Boxing

The boxing stance is the posture a boxer takes before and after every action depending on whether you are left or right handed. Well be dealing together with the most common; right-handed. For left-handed people, just reverse the instructions.

Stand with your feet shoulder width apart, Nike Air Max with your left foot in front of your right foot. Your right heel should be slightly raised with your left foot flat on the floor and toes pointing ahead.

Bend your knees a little and balance your weight comfortably and evenly.
Place your elbows close to your body with your left fist held at head height and in a position that corresponds to your left foot.

The right fist should be at head height also and guarding the chin, with both elbows protecting your physique and both fists protecting your chin.

This is your defensive and offensive position after throwing punches, so please practice this before going any further. When moving forward in this boxing stance the left foot moves forward first and then the right follows.

When moving back, the right moves back and then the left follows. When moving sideward towards the right, the right foot moves first followed by the left. When moving sideward towards the left, the left foot moves first followed by the right.

Practice this moving forward, back and sideward while in the boxers stance until it is done smoothly and quickly. Remember to keep your guard up and elbows tucked in to your sides.

Keep your head at eye level with your upper physique leaning forward slightly. In boxing it is crucial that punches are thrown quickly and then bought back quickly to assume a defensive posture.

Punching

A left jab has many uses, it can be used for both offensive and
Defensive actions. In the set stance the left arm is pushed quickly and forcefully forward, the weight is shifted to the front foot. The fist moves in a straight line and straight back again for defence.

At the moment of impact the back in the hand and the lower arm are in a straight line. Keep the right fist in the defensive position and elbow tucked into the body during the movement.

The straight right is also known as the punching hand and can be thrown with considerable force. The arm moves straightforward in the chin, the body Nike Air Max excess weight is shifted to the front foot using the ball with the foot from the back leg pushing into the floor for more power.

The back in the hand is straight and pointing up at the moment of impact. The arm is then immediately pulled back for protection after the hit.

The left hook towards the head and physique is an powerful punch for closer range function. In the set stance turn your left shoulder quickly and move your elbow up to shoulder height. The fist moves in a circular motion to the target, together with the elbow bent.

Rotate your hip and physique whilst pressing your front left down keeping the back of your fist pointing up and in a straight line with the lower arm. The left hook towards the physique is similar to the above but increases the rotation with the body

The right uppercut is also carried out at close range. Drop the lower part of your punching arm until the lower and upper arm is at right angles to each other. The back of your hand should be pointing away from you, now thrust your arm forward and upward to your target.

Shift your physique weight to your front leg and rotate your hip and shoulder on the same side. Remember to keep your left fist guarding your chin during the entire movement. Now practice all your punches until they are done quickly and smoothly.

To develop speed and endurance, try punching straight left and right combinations into the heavy bag. The duration with the exercise period is the same as the rest period i.e. 10 seconds physical exercise, 10 seconds rest, 20 seconds exercise, 20 seconds rest, and so on. Move up higher as your condition improves.

Moderate 5.4 quake hits Pakistan

A moderate 5.4-magnitude earthquake struck the far northern region of Pakistan early Tuesday, the US Geological Survey said, but there were no immediate reports of damage or casualties.

The quake's epicentre, at a depth of 35 kilometres (21.7 miles), was recorded some 119 kilometres from Mingaora in the northern Swat District and 130 kilometres from Gilgit in Kashmir.

The quake struck near the border between Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province and India's Jammu and Kashmir state around 1:30 am local time (2030 GMT on Monday).

Pakistan was hit by a 7.6-magnitude earthquake on October 8, 2005 that killed more than 73,000 people and left about 3.5 million homeless, mainly in Pakistan-controlled Kashmir and parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
