Afghans: Next force transition starts in 2 months

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) ? The next phase of transferring security from NATO to Afghan control will begin in two months and aim to cover nearly 90 percent of the country's population, the Kabul government announced Monday.

The transition, which began in early 2011, is slated to give Afghan forces full responsibility for security by the end of 2014, when most NATO troops will have withdrawn.

Misgivings persist about the readiness of Afghan forces, although their numbers have grown rapidly over the past year to more than 330,000. They now shoulder most combat operations, while NATO forces, including some 66,000 U.S., troops are preparing to pull out. The U.S. intends to keep a residual force in Afghanistan past 2014 but the size has yet to be determined.

Ashraf Ghani Ahmadzai, who heads a transition commission, told a news conference that Afghan security forces now are responsible for protecting 75 percent of the population.

"The general assessment is that security is better or the same," Ahmadzai said. The third transition phase began in May and ended Monday. He said that by the end of the fourth phase, the duration of which is open-ended, 87 percent of the people will be protected by Afghan forces.

Targeted for the upcoming transition are 12 provinces, mostly in the north and central regions, as well as a district in the southern province of Helmand, the most violent in the country.

Gen. John R. Allen, commander of foreign forces in the country, called the announcement "another historic step as (Afghanistan) gets closer to taking full responsibility for security of the entire country."

NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh said in a statement that it was a "significant step toward our shared goal of seeing Afghans fully in charge of their own security by the end of 2014."

Lolo Jones selected to US bobsled team

Lolo Jones agreed to try bobsledding because she needed something to take her mind off the rigors of her Olympic track season.

Three weeks later, she's got a spot on the national team.

Jones, a two-time Olympic hurdler, was one of 24 athletes selected to the U.S. bobsled team Thursday. She's one of six women's push athletes selected, a group that also includes Olympic sprinting gold medalist Tianna Madison.

"I just came out here and kind of needed to get away from track for a bit, kind of wanted to get some motivation," Jones told The Associated Press. "I thought coming out here with the other girls that we could help each other, we could benefit from one another. I could help them with their speed and they could help me with my strength. And just being around them, hearing their goals gave me new goals and refreshed me."

Jones was fourth at the London Games, the second time she's gone to an Olympics and come home without a hurdles medal. She was the favorite for gold at Beijing in 2008, then hit the next-to-last hurdle and finished seventh.

She still plans to compete in hurdles at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics. Only now, a trip to the 2014 Sochi Games ? in a bobsled ? might come first.

"This is a breath of fresh air ? cool, very cool, cold air," Jones said.

Jones and Madison were among a small number of track athletes invited to Lake Placid for bobsled's push championships this month by U.S. coach Todd Hays. He believed veteran Olympians would, if nothing else, help some of the team's younger competitors and raise team morale.

But Hays also had another idea in mind ? recruitment. Bobsled has long sought athletes from the track world, with their strength and explosiveness considered the perfect combination to get a sled going quickly down an icy chute.

Madison, who was part of a world-record-setting 4x100-meter relay Olympic win in London, and Jones fit what Hays was looking for. Neither had done any real training since the London Games, so the last three weeks have been hectic for Madison and Jones.

"Once they were revved up, things started clicking for both of us," Jones said. "It kind of overwhelmed us quite quickly."

Both bring star power. Jones brings an element of celebrity as well.

This summer in London, Jones competed amid criticism, even from some teammates, that she received more attention and endorsements than her accomplishments on the track warranted. One of the things she said attracted her to bobsledding was that, traditionally, it's the pilot ? not the push athlete ? who gets virtually all the attention after races.

If that holds true, Jones might be thrilled.

"When I came here, I didn't want any distractions," Jones said.

Madison ran the opening leg of the gold-winning relay in London, one that smashed the record held by East Germany for 27 years.

Other women in the push-athlete mix are 2010 Olympian Emily Azevedo, world championship medalist Katie Eberling, Lake Placid start-record-holder Aja Evans and former Cal track athlete Cherrelle Garrett.

Three women's pilots are on the roster: reigning world championships bronze medalist Elana Meyers will drive USA-1, Jamie Greubel will drive USA-2 and Jazmine Fenlator will be at the controls of USA-3. Coaches will likely determine next week which three push athletes work with the drivers for the first World Cup event of the season. Because that's six women vying for three roles, there's no guarantee that Jones or Madison would start on the World Cup circuit.

The men's roster had few surprises. World and Olympic champion Steven Holcomb will drive USA-1, with Nick Cunningham in USA-2 and Cory Butner in USA-3.

Push athletes Steve Langton, Justin Olsen and Curt Tomasevicz helped the "Night Train" sled driven by Holcomb to the world title last year, and all are back this season. Coaches chose nine other men's push athletes as well: Adam Clark, Johnny Quinn, Chuck Berkeley, Laszlo Vandracsek, Chris Fogt, Dallas Robinson, Jesse Beckom, Andreas Drbal and Nic Taylor.

The U.S. skeleton roster will be announced next week after team selection races end in Park City, Utah. World Cup racing for bobsled and skeleton opens in Lake Placid on Nov. 8.

"It was definitely a thrill," Jones said. "This is definitely the first time I've made a team and I haven't had to cross the finish line and look at the scoreboard."

IDC: Samsung and Apple still kings of the smartphone market, Nokia loses top five spot to RIM

IDC Samsung and Apple still kings of the smartphone market, Nokia loses top five spot to RIM

IDC's third quarter figures are in, complete with a few unexpected shake-ups. The entire cellphone market grew 2.4% over the same time last year, but smartphones drove the majority of that, showing growth of 45.3% and beating the analysts' expectations. Of the 179.7 million smartphones shipped, Samsung and Apple devices accounted for almost half of them, with the companies retaining their number one and two positions in the market, respectively. IDC notes that iPhone shipments didn't increase, but this is somewhat expected given the latest iteration was released only a short time before the end of the quarter. What we find particularly interesting is that Nokia was ousted from the top five smartphone players and replaced by RIM. Whether Nokia's upcoming Windows Phone 8 devices will put it back in contention remains to be seen, as does the effect BB10 and RIM's new handsets will have on the market. ZTE finished fourth in the list thanks to increased sales in North America, with HTC rounding up the top five vendors with continued uptake of its power devices. With a bunch of new handsets coming to the table and the holiday season fast approaching, look out for even more surprises in the fourth quarter numbers, due early next year.

Ghana's best shot at going green: sewage power

How might the world's poorest continent go green? Kwabena Otu-Danquah's job is to crack that riddle. The renewable energy czar for Ghana ranks among the handful of bureaucrats across Africa tasked with picking which forms of green energy might prove affordable on a continent where most people don't pay for the electricity they sometimes receive.

Last year the Ghanaian parliament signed a pledge to derive 10 percent of the country's electricity from alternative sources come 2020. Mr. Otu-Danquah is still trying to figure out which alternatives.

Sun? Forget it. Solar costs 40 cents to 50 cents a kilowatt hour, while Ghanaians pay just 5 cents to 10 cents for electricity from conventional sources. Wind? Too slow. Breeze ambles through this tropical doldrum at a leisurely average of five kilometers an hour (3.2 miles per hour). How about jatropha, a local flower Goldman Sachs pitched as the next fad biofuel? Ghana tried that. As growers mowed down farms to plant nuts for fuel, drought-battered countries to Ghana's north complained of food price spikes in some of the world's hungriest villages.

RELATED ? Top 5 nations that use renewable energy

That's forced Ghana to consider a more imaginative set of choices. Among them, sewage. Flush with a $1.5 million grant from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, local Waste Enterprisers Ltd. is building Ghana's first "fecal sludge-fed biodiesel plant." That's longhand for cooking human excrement into generator fuel, Chief Operating Officer Tim Wade explains. The transformation would serve a dual purpose. Open sewers sweep 1,000 tons of slurry each day into the ocean off Accra, spewing an ocean-top brown slick that is visible on Google Earth. Outside the upland city of Kumasi, roughly 100 trucks dump tens of thousands of liters of septic tank sewage daily into what used to be a small pond.

Luckily, nobody bothers to treat that slop. Sewage treatment plants, as far as Mr. Wade is concerned, frivol away the good stuff. If all goes according to plan, next month one truck a day from Kumasi will dump its payload into a warm and massive vat that will skim lipids ? fat ? off the top. ?That's your biodeisel,? he explains.

At $7 a gallon, he can sell the muck to local mining companies, who are keen to buy because they too have been required by parliament to power 10 percent of their private electric plants from green sources. Normal diesel does sells a few bucks cheaper, he admits, ?But we're still optimizing the process.? If he can get costs down, Mr. Wade intends to build four plants in Accra and lecture sub-divisions back home in Colorado on the folly of treating their waste.

ALTERNATIVES TO THE ALTERNATIVES

There are more sanitary ways to make a megawatt in this country. Kwame Tufor came home from Florida to liquefy Ghana's coconut husks, cocoa pods, and palm nut shells into gas. But you'd need a lot of coconuts to turn a profit that way. So he and a business partner are eyeing an old paper farm the size of Brooklyn. Sometime between one 1970s coup and another, the owner ran out of money and political favor, abandoning acres of trees that were meant to be mulched into notepads 35 years ago.

Mr. Tufor intends to saw those trees down, replant them, then burn the timber and compress the smoke into a biofuel using dated World War II technology that's been dusted off by developing world power plants. At least 10 plants in China now gasify coal this way. Farmers in the Philippines run irrigation pumps on generators that gasify rice husks. If Mr. Tufor's $200 million project pans out, local farmers would also sell him their nut shells and cocoa pods for his incinerator.

Odder sources of energy are under review. They include leftovers. Ghana's trash, it seems, boasts curiously high food content ? edibles account for 60 percent of this country's rubbish, according to Senior Researcher Robert Adu at England's De Montfort University, Leicester. He's finishing a technical proposal on how to goose a charge out of Ghana's garbage. One thing Ghana's got going for it: Locals love rice. One kilogram of the staple grain, Mr. Adu says, packs 17 kilojoules, a flicker compared to a kilo of kerosene, but great compared to a vegetable.

SUBSIDIZING TRASH

Ghana's government offers a subsidy for companies that can produce renewable energy at a cost closer to the African pay scale. For Mr. Adu, that means it might just be profitable to feed tons of rotten groceries everyday into a fire that would boil a tank of water whose steam would lurch a turbine forward. The trouble? How to cull the grub from the garbage. Trash separation schemes do exist; Mr. Adu says he's reading a book on them. He points to a plant in Germany that's mastered the technique through a process made profitable by sales of hot air, a byproduct, to heat homes in wintertime. If Mr. Adu goes that route, he'll have to find buyers looking to purchase hot air in the tropics.

Mr. Otu-Danquah isn't quite sure will this burst of invention will wind up: At the day's end, economics on what Ghanaians and their government can afford will surely dash some dreams. But the proposals make for more interesting reading, he says, than the stack of hackneyed solar plant schemes he's stuffed into a corner. Plus, some big break just might occur.

?When the time comes,? he says. ?we will have learned our lessons and developed our own technology.? At the very least, he adds, Accra might enjoy cleaner streets, cleaner sewers.

CEO of BlackBerry maker makes case for comeback

(AP) ? Research In Motion CEO Thorsten Heins is convinced the company's BlackBerry phone is poised to regain its stature as a trailblazing device even as many investors fret about its potential demise.

Heins took the stage Tuesday at a conference for mobile applications developers to rally support for the upcoming release of BlackBerry 10, a new operating system that Research In Motion Ltd. is touting as its salvation after years of blundering.

The gathering in San Jose, Calif., served as the equivalent of a revival meeting for RIM. The Canadian company has been laying off thousands of workers to offset growing losses after being outmaneuvered by iPhone maker Apple Inc. and other phone makers relying on Google Inc.'s Android software.

"We recognize the need for change," said Heins, who was promoted to CEO in January as RIM's troubles deepened. "There is a new energy and a lot of fighting spirit at RIM."

Heins and other top RIM executives used the conference to provide a glimpse at some of BlackBerry 10's new features. The redesigned software won't hit the market until a still-unscheduled date early next year.

That means RIM's new software won't be available during the holiday shopping season, costing the company more sales during a period when millions of people are expected to be snapping up the latest iPhone, Android device and even a new handset from another struggling mobile phone company, Nokia, that is tying its fate to Microsoft's latest Windows software.

Despite RIM's missteps, the BlackBerry still commands a huge following with about 80 million subscribers, thanks mostly to its appeal to corporate customers who like the device's security and compatibility with their email systems.

Heins did his best to argue that the BlackBerry 10 will be worth the wait.

"We are committed to making BlackBerry 10 an inflection point in mobile computing," Heins said.

The system is being designed to make it easier to find and use multiple applications simultaneously by swiping a finger across the phone's display screen instead of having to press on a home button to navigate through a menu of programs, like the iPhone requires. All notifications from various applications are supposed to be sent a central point known as the BlackBerry Hub.

In an attempt to cater to its main customer base of business users, RIM also promises BlackBerry 10 will offer more security features, better calendar management features and more tools to connect with other workers.

RIM is retooling the software to adapt to the growing number of people who want a smartphone that can fulfill both their personal and professional needs. In an effort to make its phones better suited for employees who want to use their personal phones for work instead of relying on employer-issued devices, the new system includes a feature called "BlackBerry Balance." That enables users to touch an icon on the screen to toggle between two different menus of applications and services, one set up for personal stuff and the other programmed for work.

"We are convinced this platform will shape the next 10 years as profoundly and as positively as BlackBerry shaped the last decade," Heins said.

Investors appeared to be heartened by what they heard and saw from RIM Tuesday. The company's stock gained 32 cents, or 5 percent, to $6.62 in Tuesday's afternoon trading. That's still far below the stock's peak price of about $148, reached in June 2008. The iPhone was seen then more as a technology toy for affluent geeks and the first wave of Android-powered devices had not yet been released.

Shake Up Your Internet Marketing Game Through These Tips | Eric ...

Internet marketing is used by many to sell their services and products. Internet marketing helps you use ads and SEO to make profits. If you would like to learn more about internet marketing, you may find the following information useful.

Provide free gifts to go along with purchases of your services and/or products to help customers feel respected. When you give things away for free, it is very easy for you to get your reputation up and for people to trust you.

Send related items and catalogs to your customers. They are more likely to make purchases from you if a previous order went well. For example, if you run a site for books and they have bought a cookbook, send them links to all the other cookbooks you offer. When you can make your recommendations to them based on their purchase history, you are much more likely to get a repeat customer.

TIP! Think about your customers when making your site and promoting it. Is it easy to use? Does it engage your customers? Ordering products should be quick, easy and secure.

It is commonly said that you shouldn?t bring business into your personal affairs, but this particular type of business is probably an exception to that rule. The reason is, because you don?t have as much pressure put on you, therefore, this can be seen as a hobby. It is a good idea to make this something that you and your spouse can do together.

When you are writing your marketing copy, make use of HTML tags that emphasize certain words or phrases. Draw focus to words or phrases that you want to highlight by using bold text, underlining the phrases or italicizing the words. Doing this specifies exactly what you want to say to your customers.

When you are using signatures, link them to your site or email. If you post on forums, your website?s URL should be in your signature. You should always post a link within your signature block of all the emails you send out. By doing this you will be passively promoting your website every time you communicate with someone online. Additionally, you will also be building quality backlinks to your website which can have a positive affect on your website?s SERP ranking. Highlight that link by introducing it with a catchy, related quote.

TIP! Assuring the security of your customers information and financial details is vital to gaining customer?s trust and business. There are many ways to ensure your customer?s security.

Follow your competition to stay aware of current trends and failures in your market. It is easy to look at your competitor?s sites and see what kinds of features they are using. Also, find out how much traffic they are seeing so you can compare it to your own site.

It is no secret that people often respect those who hold positions of authority in a business. Of course, you can be this authority figure if you speak on your product in an informative, honest and compelling way. You may even want to call yourself the business?s President or CEO.

On great way to encourage sales is to offer a special incentive at the start. Some examples of limited-time offers include discounts to the first 500 customers or free shipping for people who order within the next week. But it is important that urgency is created to get the people to act right away.

TIP! If you are good at writing, write an article about your business and submit it to magazines that accept submissions. Ensure you have the business information for your company in the articles.

Keeping websites simple and easy is something that webmasters sometimes do not think about. Adobe Flash and other multimedia tools can be seductive to website owners, so professional website designers push these tools. Not everyone knows how to navigate their website in the right way, keep this in mind. A well designed website that encourages business finds a way to be fully functional, even without the latest shiny and flashy features.

TIP! Another key to Internet marketing is your competition. Find out what is and what isn?t working for them.

Building a squeeze page is one tactic for building your contact list. This encourages your site visitors to offer up their email address. To help get visitors to give their email offer a free item. This demonstrates to them that you understand the value of the information you?re asking for.

Use a short promotion to help raise your PageRank on your eCommerce website. If the deal is good enough, you can ?buy? PageRank because consumer news and deals sites will link to yours. This is the same thing as selling something as a loss and making money off of it later.

TIP! If you want to carry good SEO strategies into your future, you must keep track of how people perceive you, the events you propose, and the activities you provide online. This will help you tailor the things you offer in the future for maximum popularity.

In conclusion, many businesses use Internet marketing to sell products and services. Internet marketing uses methods such as search engine optimization and advertising to generate sales interest. Apple Samsung demand changes to $1B verdict

1 hr.

SAN FRANCISCO ??Neither side in a bitter patent battle is satisfied with Apple's $1 billion jury verdict over Samsung after a three-week trial this summer.

Samsung wants a new trial. Apple is seeking an additional $707 million in damages and interest.

The two companies filed a blizzard of legal papers late Friday and early Saturday with their demands that a federal judge in San Jose significantly amend ? or toss out altogether ? the jury's Aug. 24 verdict.

The jury found that 26 Samsung products ripped off Apple's technology at the heart of its iPhones and iPads.

"Samsung made a calculated business decision to copy the industrial designs, graphical user interfaces, and touchscreen navigation technology of the iPhone and iPad," Apple lawyers wrote in court papers, arguing for the additional damages. "Samsung has reaped extraordinary rewards from its wrongful sale of iPhone and iPad clones by taking market share, revenues, and profits from Apple."

The Apple lawyers contend that the "massive damage to the iPhone's distinctive product identity caused by Samsung's sale of millions of iPhone clones is irreversible."

U.S. District Judge Lucy Koh has scheduled a Dec. 6 hearing to discuss the myriad issues raised by both companies. Samsung says it will appeal if Koh turns down its demands.

The two companies are locked in a ferocious struggle for supremacy in the global smartphone market. Samsung is the worldwide leaders in smartphone sales, securing a market share of 33 percent in the second quarter, up from 17 percent a year ago. Apple's fell slightly to 17 percent, from 19 percent a year ago.

Apple accuses Samsung of essentially selling knockoffs of the Cupertino-based company's iPhones. Apple filed a lawsuit in San Jose federal court, alleging patent infringement. It was the latest legal action between the two companies, who are battling in courts in 10 countries over smartphone technology.

On Friday, Samsung asked the San Jose judge for a new trial. The company's lawyer argued that the jury's verdict was unreasonable and unsupported by the testimony and evidence. The company's lawyers also complained that the judge's strict constraints on the number of witnesses and testimony time deprived it of a fair trial.

"The Court's constraints on trial time, witnesses and exhibits were unprecedented for a patent case of this complexity and magnitude, and prevented Samsung from presenting a full and fair case in response to Apple's many claims," the company's lawyer wrote in court documents.

Representatives of both companies couldn't be reached for comment.?

Is The Motion Picture Assisted Living Home A Warning?

Posted by viking12 on Sep 20, 2012 in Uncategorized

If you're able to demonstrate to your elder the right way to absolutely relax and fall like a rag doll would, the prospects of reducing the scale of injury is significantly reinforced. Just like any other person, aged people tense up when they start to fall. Simply go limp as you fall. When you have done this a couple of times, ask your elder if they would like to try it. Some grown kids might have basically reversed roles with their mom and pop, and now they're the cooks, girls, and sitters. Don?t require them into doing this, but inspire on them how critical it might be to help them escape major injury should they fall. The ad hoc, delinquent caregiving obligations are costed at over three bill greenbacks in America. If you've gone and taken up this role, then you're definitely not alone. Till , consultants and others who suggest these products are educated we are going to continue to see the expansion of lower quality ineffectual products.

The value of this contribution totals up to over Medicaid spending for long-term care. Many products don?t perform according to the selling materials and / or the proposed use is narrow, so almost ineffectual. People who endorse mobility aids should focus upon efficacy, safety and intended use otherwise we finish up paying the best price when a fall occurs. This is one reason products are inappropriately selected and how issues of safety are made. The elder, and the elder?s family, are now starting on a strenuous journey thru cloudy waters. The journey starts with the observation the current system in our country for addressing long term care is a non-system, a hodgepodge of services that fails to meet the requirements of the old and disabled in the selection of long term care settings. It is economically wasteful and it fails to reassure the standard of services that are supplied. Now , old folks finance long term care services from a spread of sources, including non-public resources, like private savings, care donated by acquaintances and family, and long term care insurance and public programs, including Medicaid and Medicare.

The advantages to the family include liberty from the pressures of care-giving, alleviation from stress about paying up for care, steerage with each legal, medical care and long term care call for the remainder of the elder?s life, confidence that comes from having a plan for continuing care as the elder?s condition advances, security as the partner and family are offered for and assurance because the inalienable right to quality care is protected. Lots of our customers begin their initiation in the long term care maze with a stay in the surgery, which Medicare pays for. The advantages to the elder include getting the right care earlier, preservation of autonomy for so long as possible the power to age with grace, and the safety of realizing that you've got an advocate devoted to maximising standard of living. The Life Care Plan places special accent on issues surrounding a long life. The Life Care Plan connects your worries about long term care as you go thru the later stages of your life with the information and experience of an Elder Law solicitor and an Elder Care Coordinator who will be with you and your family each stage to help you in making the right selections.

Goldman's new CFO will get $1.85 million paycheck

CNBC's Mary Thompson reports Goldman Sachs is replacing CFO David Viniar, with incoming officer, Harvey Schwartz.

By Roland Jones, NBC News

Harvey Schwartz, who will take over as chief financial officer at Goldman Sachs early next year, is set to receive an annual salary of $1.85 million.

Currently a senior trading executive, Schwartz will replace David Viniar as CFO at the end of January. Viniar, who plans to retire, spent 12 years in the role, making him the longest-serving CFO on Wall Street.

Viniar, 57, is also among the best-compensated executives in the financial services industry, having made $15.8 million in 2011.

However, the salary portion of Viniar?s pay is the same $1.85 million that Schwartz will receive, and is also received by the bank?s president, Gary Cohn, and its two vice chairmen, Michael Evans and John Weinberg.

Viniar was CFO at Goldman as it became a public company in 1999, and through the financial crisis of 2008. He spent a total of 32 years as an employee at the bank.

He will become a member of Goldman's board after his retirement and will become eligible for cash bonuses of several million dollars for 2011 and 2012 in addition to his conventional compensation if the company hits preset profitability targets.

Viniar said in a conference call late Tuesday that it was the right time for him to step down, as the bank is now in a strong position, from a capital and liquidity perspective.

The bank emerged from the recent financial crisis relatively unscathed, but it has not avoided bad publicity in recent years.

A former board member was found guilty in a government investigation into insider trading and had to pay a $550 million settlement with regulators over charges of securities fraud linked to mortgage investments.

But it was a scathing Op-Ed article in the New York Times from a former Goldman employee titled ?Why I Am Leaving Goldman Sachs? that grabbed the most headlines.

In his article, Greg Smith, a former executive director at the investment bank, accused Goldman of routinely ripping off its clients and described the bank?s culture as ?toxic and destructive,? putting profit ahead of the interests of its clients.

The appointment of Schwartz is the latest in a series of executive moves at Goldman as it prepares for a change in top management, perhaps to improve the bank?s public image.

Schwartz is one of a small group of executives who are seen as potential candidates to take over from current Chief Executive Officer Lloyd Blankfein should he decide to step down.

In April, Blankfein appeared in his first television interview in two years, admitting to CNBC that the bank ?hasn?t gotten everything right? in its dealings with the public.

Reuters contributed to this report.

Oil holds around $99; gasoline at avg. $3.86

NEW YORK (AP) ? The price of oil holding steady around $99 a barrel Monday, after getting a boost last week from the U.S. Federal Reserve's latest plan to boost the U.S. economy.

Benchmark crude slipped 5 cents to $98.95 in afternoon trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. Oil rose 2.7 percent last week.

The Fed's plan, which includes keeping interest rates at extraordinarily low rates into 2015, gives investors the incentive to put their money into riskier assets like commodities. But the higher oil rises, the more analysts believe consumers will pull back on spending.

While higher oil prices tend to drive up prices at the pump, the end of the summer driving season means less demand for gasoline.

The national average for gasoline Monday is $3.862, down slightly from Friday, according to AAA, Wright Express and the Oil Price Information Service. That's still up about 14 cents from a month ago.

Brent crude, which is used to price international varieties of oil, fell 54 cents to $116.12 per barrel on the ICE Futures Exchange London.

Other futures lost ground on the New York Mercantile Exchange:

? Wholesale gasoline fell 2 cents to $2.99 a gallon.

? Heating oil fell 3 cents to $3.21 a gallon.

? Natural gas lost 7 cents to $2.87 per 1,000 cubic feet.

iPhone 5 camera updated to feature sapphire crystal construction, better low light handling, and FaceTime HD

iPhone 5 camera updated to feature sapphire crystal and beter low light handling

Apple's shown off the new camera that'll be a part of the iPhone 5 from their live event in San Francisco. While the iPhone 4S already contains an amazing camera, the iPhone 5 will add sapphire crystal construction, better handling in low light environments, and more.

Along with better handling in low light will come features such as precision lens alignment. The camera will remain at the 8 MP we currently have in the iPhone 4S along with the five-element lens construction and f/2.4 aperture. All of this will be bundled with better image handling and a thinner package for an all around better quality image.

FaceTime will also see an update that will add HD support which should result in a much better streaming experience, especially over the new Wi-Fi and LTE technology.

We'll update with more on official specs as soon as they're available.

Kindle Fire HD Review: Everything a Tablet Should Be?And Not Much More [Review]

In some ways, the idea of the first Kindle Fire was more impressive than the product itself. It was a $200 tablet that actually worked. That alone was mind-blowing. But after Google's Nexus 7 bombshell—and the iPad Mini looming—Amazon has to do more than cut costs this time. The Fire HD has to shine. More »

Metabolic engineer synthesizes key breast milk ingredient: Sugar in human milk may protect babies from pathogens

ScienceDaily (Sep. 10, 2012) ? A University of Illinois microbial engineer has synthesized a sugar in human milk that is thought to protect babies from pathogens. That's important because 2FL, the shorthand scientists use to describe this human milk oligosaccharide (HMO), has not been added to infant formula because HMOs are incredibly expensive.

"We know these oligosaccharides play a vital role in developing a breast-fed baby's gut microbiota and in strengthening their immunity. 2FL (2-fucosyllactose) is the most abundant HMO in breast milk," said Michael Miller, a U of I professor of food microbiology.

To learn more about the HMO's function, Miller would like to do research with 2FL in newborn piglets, an excellent model for the human infant.

Unfortunately, 1 milligram of 2FL costs $100, meaning a single study would require $1 million for the HMO alone, he said.

Microbiologist, meet metabolic engineer. Yong-Su Jin, a departmental colleague and professor in the U of I's Institute for Genomic Biology, believed he could synthesize this oligosaccharide found in breast milk using a strain of E. coli engineered for that purpose.

A new postdoctoral researcher in Jin's laboratory had done some of the legwork for such a project in Korea, and they used their combined experience and expertise to engineer an HMO that can be produced very cheaply and quickly: 1 gram of 2FL per liter of E. coli broth. That means it's possible to produce 2FL in the lab, making Miller's piglet research feasible, he said.

"E. coli makes a starting material for 2FL as part of its normal metabolism, and that suggested to us that it was possible to use E. coli to produce 2FL," Jin said.

"The trick is to get the E. coli cells to increase their production of the starting material (GDP-fucose), which we did by overexpressing the pre-existing biosynthetic pathway. Then we had to give it the ability to transfer GDP-fucose to lactose. We solved that problem by inserting a gene from another organism," he added.

The next step was developing an E. coli mutant that can assimilate lactose. "Because the engineered mutant cannot use the lactose for its own growth, it instead uses lactose to make great quantities of 2FL, the HMO that many researchers want to study," he said.

Miller will soon be able to begin a study investigating the role of 2FL in infant nutrition and eventually make recommendations about whether it should be added to infant formula. "And we can use this technique to synthesize and study the hundreds of other HMOs in human milk too."

The research has other interesting possibilities unrelated to infant nutrition, he said.

Jin and Miller believe that their work has pharmaceutical applications. "Adding 2FL to the food of soldiers on deployment could keep them out of sick bay. More than half of all soldiers in the field are incapacitated at some point with diarrheal illness caused by Campylobacter jejuni," Jin said.

A second use might be reducing the number of Campylobacter infections that originate in raw or undercooked poultry. "If chickens consumed poultry feed containing 2FL, pathogens would bind to this oligosaccharide instead of the mucosal lining of the bird's intestine and be eliminated well before the chicken arrived at your supermarket," Miller added.

Whole cell biosynthesis of a functional oligosaccharide, 2'-fucosyllactose, using engineered Escherichia coli" was published in Microbial Cell Factories.

Co-authors with Jin and Miller are Won Heong Lee, Panchalee Pathanibul, and Josh Quarterman of the U of I, Nam Soo Han of Chungbuk National University in Korea, and Jung-Hyun Jo and Jin-Ho Seo of Seoul National University in Korea. Jin and Lee are affiliated with the U of I's Institute for Genomic Biology, and Lee is also affiliated with Seoul National University.

Tredwell leaves South Africa in a spin

James Tredwell atoned for dropping two catches with three wickets as England restricted South Africa to 220 for eight in the fourth one-day international at Lord's on Sunday.

The off-spinner took three for 35, all stumped by wicket-keeper Craig Kieswetter -- in eight overs.

Tredwell had kept his place after figures of two for 49 during England's four-wicket win across London at The Oval on Friday which levelled the five-match series at 1-1.

The Kent bowler only got his chance when England rested number one spinner Graeme Swann for the rest of this series because of a longstanding elbow injury.

And it seemed England might miss Swann as much for his slip catching as his bowling on Sunday when Tredwell dropped openers Hashim Amla, on four, and Graeme Smith, on 26, both off fast bowler Steven Finn.

But unlike previous England dropped catches this season -- which helped Amla become the first South African to a Test triple century, at The Oval last month, and 150 in an 80-run win in the second one-dayer in Southampton on Tuesday -- neither proved excessively costly.

Instead it was South Africa-born Dernbach who had Smith, on 29, top-edging a pull to Kieswetter to leave the Proteas 68 for one after England captain Alastair Cook won the toss and fielded in overcast conditions that promised assistance to his seamers.

And missing Amla, 'only' cost England 41 runs Sunday when he was bowled between bat and pad by medium-pacer Ravi Bopara for an innings top score of 45.

Amla's exit was the start of a South Africa collapse from 100 for one to 115 for four.

JP Duminy was stumped off a well-flighted Tredwell delivery, before Bopara (two for 34) bowled Faf du Plessis off the inside edge.

South Africa went 13 overs without a boundary as captain AB de Villiers and Dean Elgar compiled a stand of 51 in 74 balls.

But de Villiers (29) and Wayne Parnell (five) were both stumped by former South Africa junior international Kieswetter, who finished with five dismissals in the innings, as Tredwell took two wickets for no runs in five balls.

Robin Peterson struck Tredwell for a switch-hit four and a six off successive deliveries, the left-hander's 31 not out coming off 20 balls.

'Teen Mom' series ends with laughs, tears

By Bruna Nessif, E! Online

Louis A Raynor / MTV

The show is over for the cast of MTV's "Teen Mom," from left Farrah Abraham, Catelynn Lowell, Maci Bookout and Amber Portwood,

That animated "Teen Mom" book is now closed forever. On Tuesday night, fans had to say goodbye to original castmembers Catelynn, Farrah, Maci and Amber (well, until the two-part reunion with Dr. Drew).

So what were our last memories with our favorite young mothers?

"Teen Mom 2's" Jenelle Evans gets drug and assault charges dropped

Catelynn: The drama with Tyler's father, Butch, continued and viewers started to see exactly how it affected the usually calm Ty. All of a sudden, the young guy that caught all of America's hearts from day one was dropping F-bombs and having temper tantrums like we've never seen -- over doggy doo-doo! This led to him seeing his therapist which led to us having a sobfest in front of the television screens.

"I don't know why. I never did anything wrong to the guy so I don't know why he doesn't love me," he said of his father, and then decided to write Butch a lengthy letter to finally cut ties with the dad he never had.

Farrah: As sad as this new Florida girl was to have daughter Sophia stay with grandma in Nebraska for a month, it worked out for the best. Farrah finished her first quarter of school with straight A's! Regardless, she made it clear that she doesn't want to send Soph away again, and cried about it a couple times. Even Sophia called her a "cry baby," which was way too cute and hilarious.

Have you seen Farrah's music video?

Maci: The tension between Maci and Ryan didn't die down during the series finale, and kind of left us hanging. Ry decided to visit his lawyer's office (again) to file for joint custody and possibly make it a violation of the court for Kyle and Maci to live together since they're not married. But once he brought that up to his parents and girlfriend Dalis, his GF quickly said, "What if we decide to live together?" She's got a point there, Ryan.

Unfortunately, that's where Maci's story ended. We don't know what happened with the court or if Ryan even went through with the filing.

Amber: Oh, where to start? First off, we meet a new man in Amber's life, Mike, who seemed like a nice guy but Gary didn't care and hated him regardless. A huge argument went down between Leah's parents when Gary decided to throw his daughter a birthday party that Amber wasn't allowed to go to, instead of waiting until after their court hearing to celebrate. We were also introduced to a new phrase that Amber's baby daddy called her--"slut puppy."

See what Daniel had to say about his breakup with Farrah!

Yeah, but we all know Gary, and within the next five minutes he felt bad and made things right with Amber again. The duo went to court together (held hands, even!) and ultimately, Gary got sole custody of Leah and the no-contact order was dropped.

Amber's camp tells E! News that she's doing OK and behaving in jail. There's even a possibility that if she continues her good behavior, Amber could be released before her five-year sentence is up.

What did you think of the final episode of the series? How do you think these young moms will fare out of the "Teen Mom" spotlight? Share your thoughts on our Facebook page.

Two alien planets found with twin suns

Astronomers have for the first time discovered two alien planets whirling around a pair of stars: a complete solar system with twin suns just like Luke Skywalker's fictional home world Tatooine.

Most stars like our sun are not singletons, but rather come in pairs that orbit each other. Scientists had found planets in these binary systems, so-called circumbinary planets with two suns like Tatooine in the "Star Wars" universe.

To find more circumbinary planets, astronomers analyzed data from NASA's prolific Kepler space telescope, which has detected more than 2,300 potential alien worlds since its March 2009 launch. Kepler had to date detected four systems with circumbinary planets ? Kepler-16, 34, 35 and 38.

  1. Space news from NBCNews.com

    1. Listen to the first song from Mars

Science editor Alan Boyle's blog: Hip-hop musician will.i.am's "Reach for the Stars" officially became the first song broadcast from Mars, thanks to a signal beamed from NASA's Curiosity rover.

    2. In photos from the moon, where's Neil?
    3. Push on to save Apollo 11 lunar base
    4. SpaceX cleared for ISS cargo deliveries

The scientists have now announced the detection of Kepler-47, the first system seen with multiple worlds encircling a pair of stars. The star and its planets, called Kepler-47b and Kepler-47c, dwell about 5,000 light-years away, in the constellation Cygnus, the Swan. [ Planets of the Tatooine-like Solar System (Gallery) ]

"Kepler-47 shows us that binary stars can have close-in planetary systems, just like the ones we see in single stars," study lead author Jerome Orosz at San Diego State University told SPACE.com. "Most of the stars in the galaxy are in binary or higher-order multiple systems, so the fact that planetary systems can exist in these types of systems is important. If we were restricted to looking for planets around single stars, we would be missing most of the stars in the galaxy."

Spotting 'Tatooine' solar system
The planets are much too far away to see with the naked eye. Rather, they were discovered by the drop in brightness they cause when they cross in front of, or transit, their host stars.

This dimming is tiny, only 0.08 percent for planet Kepler-47b and 0.2 percent for planet Kepler-47c. By comparison, Venus blocked about 0.1 percent of the sun's surface during its recent transit. Data from Kepler enabled researchers to deduce the relative sizes of the objects and orbits. They also relied on follow-up observations performed by telescopes at the McDonald Observatory in West Texas.

One of the stars is much like our sun, and the other is about a third its size and 175 times fainter. The inner and outer planets are respectively 3 and 4.6 times Earth's diameter ? the smaller planet is the smallest circumbinary planet seen yet. [ Tatooine-Like System Found, 2 Planets, 2 Stars (Video) ]

The inner world completes an orbit every 49.5 days, while the outer one takes 303.2 days, giving it the largest known orbit for any transiting exoplanet. The stars themselves whirl around each other every 7.5 days.

The scientists published their findings online Aug. 28 in the journal Science. They will also detail their results Aug. 29 at the General Assembly of the International Astronomical Union in Beijing.

Planet in the habitable zone?
Intriguingly, the outer planet lurks in the system's habitable zone, where a rocky planet like Earth is the right temperature to have liquid water on its surface.

"We've learned that circumbinary planets can be like the planets in our own solar system, but with two suns," said study co-author Joshua Carter at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics.

Although the outer planet is probably a gas giant slightly larger than Uranus and therefore not suitable for life as we know it, these findings do show that circumbinary planets can and do exist in habitable zones.

"The thing I find most exciting is the potential for habitability in a circumbinary system," said study co-author William Welsh at San Diego State University. "Kepler-47c is not likely to harbor life, but if it had large moons, those would be very interesting worlds."

Weird weather on Tatooine planets
Circumbinary planets might undergo relatively wild climate swings.

On Earth, the sun is a relatively stable source of light, with the solar insolation or energy we receive only varying by 0.1 percent or so. "As a result, we don't need to worry about what the sun is doing, at least over time-scales of years to decades," Orosz said. "For a planet around a binary system, there can be changes in the insolation of several percent on the time-scale of days to weeks. In addition, if the planet's rotation axis is tilted, then that also has an effect. Therefore the seasons are rapid and complicated."

"Also, let's say for the sake of discussion that the planet's rotation period is 24 hours, just like the Earth," he added. "Because you have two suns instead of one, you can have more than 12 hours of daylight, depending on the positions of the stars at sunrise or sunset."

In addition, since all the circumbinary planets the Kepler space telescope has discovered have orbits closely aligned with the orbits their stars have with each other, "you would see your suns eclipse each other on a regular basis," Orosz said. "In the case of Kepler-47, when the secondary star passes in front of the primary, the total light drops by 15 percent. This would happen every 7.5 days or so."

More exotic alien solar systems possible
The new discovery show that planetary systems can form and survive even in the chaotic environment around binary stars.

The researchers expect that the planets in Kepler-47 originated much farther out than their present orbits, at locations where the conditions for the formation of giant planets are more favorable. They eventually then migrated inward due to interactions with the disk of gas and dust that also encircled the stars.

"We think these planets and most other planets formed from a residual disk of debris left over from the star-formation process," Orosz said. "It was not at all obvious that this disk could survive near a newly formed binary star, given the orbital motions of the two stars. However, it now appears that apart from minor differences in the orbital spacings, planetary systems around binary stars can be similar to those around single stars."

In the future, the researchers want to look for smaller and smaller alien planets around binary stars.

"We are at the limit of what simple visual searches can do, so we need better software to help us automate the process," Orosz said. "Given more time and data, I think we can find more circumbinary planetary systems in the Kepler data."
