Helpful Dog Training Advice That Your Dog Will Love | Love My Pets ...

Training a dog may seem like an uphill battle, but it is quite easy once you know exactly what you are doing. With these tips you will be able to learn what your dog needs in order for him to understand how to be a great member of your family.

To help train your dog, you must assert yourself as the dominant one in your relationship by refusing to give the dog undeserved attention or food. When you convince your dog you run the show and, in addition, let the dog recognize you can use that power to give it something it wants, your dog will obey your commands more effectively.

If you are going to dress your dog up for Halloween, don?t be too elaborate. After all, your dog won?t have any idea why you are doing such a silly thing, and he may be quite distressed or embarrassed by it. Just do something simple like a bandanna or something that will fit easily on his collar. In this way you will not run the risk of having your dog bolt or hide or engage in some other unexpected, potentially dangerous behavior.

Dogs are happiest by your side, so remember that training requires a commitment from you as a pet owner. Your dog is a commitment for the rest of his natural life, so your training sessions should be a time to bond. Make them fun and rewarding for you both, and training will never be a chore. Training should be a joyful time!

Every interaction, moment and situation is a learning experience for your dog. While you can?t control the environment around you, you can control how you react with your dog. Keep a composed demeanor when you?re working with your dog, and try not to intimidate him, even when you?re frustrated or upset.

Dogs learn through reinforcement. When your dog does something you approve of and you would like to train them to do that on command, reward them with your voice. Consider, for example, the dog that unpredictably brings his owner his slippers. The owner should excitedly say the word ?slippers? or whatever word they chose as a command for that behavior.

When training your dog, avoid overlong training sessions by training your dog in several smaller sessions spaced throughout the day. By scattering your training at different times throughout the day your dog will learn to listen to you whenever and wherever you are.

While training your dog, observe his body language and general behavior closely. Look for signs of enthusiasm. Is his tail wagging? Does he follow you around? This shows he?s ready to learn. If you see your dog is scared, bored or nervous, stop what you are doing and reevaluate.

Clicker Training

Using a clicker is helpful in training your dog to learn new behaviors. Clicker training teaches a dog to identify which behaviors produce a reward, often his favorite treat. For example, if you give your dog the command, ?sit? and he obeys, you click the clicker and he gets a treat.

If you are looking for a positive way to train your dog, try clicker training. In clicker training you teach your dog to associate treats and good behavior with the sound of a click. This training method is much more clear to dogs than methods that use both rewards and punishments.

The dog-owner relationship is as old as history itself, and it is not going away any time soon! With information of the kind that has been presented here, dog owners can find the perfect training strategy to make their dog-training experience a successful and happy one.

Stanley Smith has been involved with dogs for many years with experience of a wide range of breeds of all shapes and sizes. Have a look his new website Clicker Training Results for more Clicker Training Information.

Allmendinger says he tested positive for stimulant

In this Friday, July 6, 2012, photo, AJ Allmendinger helps push his car down pit row during qualifying for the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series auto race at Daytona International Speedway in Daytona Beach, Fla. NASCAR has temporarily suspended Allmendinger after he failed a drug test. Allmendinger won't be allowed to drive Saturday night, July 7, in the Sprint Cup race at Daytona. In this Friday, July 6, 2012, photo, AJ Allmendinger helps push his car down pit row during qualifying for the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series auto race at Daytona International Speedway in Daytona Beach, Fla. Instead, Sam Hornish Jr. will be behind the wheel of the No. 22 Dodge for Penske Racing. Allmendinger has 72 hours to request that his B sample be tested. (AP Photo/Phelan M. Ebenhack)

(AP) ? Suspended NASCAR driver AJ Allmendinger said Wednesday that he tested positive for a stimulant and was collecting his medicines and supplements in an attempt to figure out what got him in trouble.

A statement issued by Allmendinger's business manager did not identify the stimulant and said the driver does not know what caused him to fail the random test conducted June 29. He was suspended Saturday and NASCAR has not revealed the substance, either.

"AJ tested positive for a stimulant. He has no idea why the first test was positive, and he has never knowingly taken any prohibited substance," said Tara Ragan, vice president of Allmendinger's Walldinger Racing Inc. "AJ is collecting his medicines and supplements for testing to determine whether an over-the-counter product caused his positive test."

Allmendinger is the second Sprint Cup Series driver to be suspended under the NASCAR drug policy implemented in 2009. The 30-year-old Allmendinger has requested his "B'' urine sample be tested, and it's not clear when that will occur.

Allmendinger said Tuesday that he would never knowingly take a prohibited substance.

"Obviously I would never do anything to jeopardize my opportunity here at Penske Racing or to my fellow drivers. I am very conscious about my training and health and would never knowingly take a prohibited drug," he said.

According to NASCAR's drug policy, a stimulant is defined as "amphetamine, methamphetamine, Ecstasy (MDMA), Eve (MDEA), MDA, PMA, Phentermine, and other amphetamine derivatives and related compounds."

In March, Allmendinger signed on as a brand ambassador for "Fuel in a Bottle," energy and protein power shots owned by Charlotte-based BYB Brands, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Coca-Cola Bottling Co.

There's been no official link to his positive test and the power shots. The March press release announcing the partnership with Allmendinger described "Fuel in a Bottle" as a booster that "provides a quick energy boost in convenient 2-ounce liquid form. It is packed with B vitamins, is sugar free and has zero calories."

The power boost includes "essential amino acids that your body needs," the release said. "Both varieties of Fuel in a Bottle allow consumers to recharge in minutes. Run stronger for hours."

Among the ingredients listed on the label are L-Phenylalanine and caffeine, which are both mild stimulants.

Jeremy Mayfield, the first driver to be suspended under the policy, tested positive for methamphetamine. He has denied for more than three years that he ever took meth, and blamed the positive test on a mix of an over-the-counter allergy remedy and a prescription for attention deficit disorder.

Rather than go through NASCAR's recovery program, Mayfield fought in court to have his suspension overturned. He abandoned his bid earlier this year.

Ragan said Allmendinger is working through NASCAR's process to resolve the issue.

"AJ and all of us at Walldinger Racing respect NASCAR's testing program, and he has requested that his "B'' sample be tested as part of the process of getting to the bottom of this," she said. "We will have the opportunity to review all of the scientific data surrounding the test following the "B'' sample test, but our understanding is that AJ's test was slightly above the threshold."

The suspension was announced hours before Saturday night's race at Daytona International Speedway and Sam Hornish Jr. was hustled in to race in Allmendinger's place. Penske Racing has already said that Hornish will drive the No. 22 Dodge this weekend at New Hampshire.

The team has not discussed its plans for its first-year driver. Allmendinger was hired in late December after Penske's sudden split with Kurt Busch opened the highly-coveted seat.

Meanwhile, sports car team owner Michael Shank issued a statement of support for Allmendinger, whom he referred to as "a friend of mine, actually more like a brother."

Shank and Allmendinger last October partnered to form an IndyCar Series team, but a lack of sponsorship prevented them from fielding a car this season. But Allmendinger has competed for Michael Shank Racing for years in the prestigious Rolex 24 Hours of Daytona sports car race, and in January he anchored the race-winning entry for one of the biggest career victories for both driver and owner.

"I stand 100 percent behind him in this challenging time," Shank said. "He has stood behind me and been loyal to my team for seven years, even when we let him down he never considered bailing on me and my team. I will certainly never leave him behind when tough times come for him. No matter what happens he will stay my friend and continue to drive for me whenever possible."

Daily Kos: Gallup: Young gaining insurance, older adult workers ...

Gallup's latest Gallup-Healthways Well-Being Index survey is well-timed, and shows the very real impact President Obama talked about in Ohio today. The Affordable Care Act is working for young adults.

Despite employer-based insurance rates declining for younger adults, up to age 27, there are fewer of them without insurance because of the Affordable Care Act's provision that allows them to stay on their parents' health plans. So while fewer are reporting employer-based insurance, their insurance rates have improved.

Not all the news on insurance rates is good, of course. The downward trend of people aged 26 to 64 getting insurance from an employer that began in 2008 continues. "The 55.9% who reported having it in the second quarter of 2012 is down from 56.7% in 2011 and is the lowest Gallup has found since 2008," Gallup reports.

But:

It is clear, though, that one part of the law?the piece allowing those up to age 26 to stay on their parents' plans?has already had a significant effect. More 18- to 25-year-olds have gained health insurance. [...] Those who are older, though, have become more likely to be uninsured?mainly due to fewer reporting that they are getting insurance from an employer.
The rest of the law, as Obama explained, will start bringing down the number of uninsured as soon as it's fully implemented.

That's the kind of success Republicans want to stop from happening. Because, as Mitch McConnell says, covering the uninsured is "not the issue" as far as they're concerned. Neither is covering people with pre-existing conditions, according to John Boehner. And then there's the slew of Republican governors willing to sacrifice people's lives to make a political point.

Nathaniel Hawthorne: 10 quotes on his birthday

American novelist Nathaniel Hawthorne was born on July 4, 1804 in Salem, Massachusetts, where his great grandfather, John Hathorne, had been one of the three judges who presided over the Salem Witch trials. Hawthorne distanced himself from the connection by adding a ?w? to his last name. He graduated from Bowdoin College in 1821, where he became close friends with Henry Wadsworth Longfellow and future president Franklin Pierce. After graduating, Hawthorne lived for a time at the experimental Brook Farm in Massachusetts. Once married, Hawthorne he rented a house in from Ralph Waldo Emerson and joined the Transcendentalist literary circle in Concord. During his writing career, Hawthorne published a number of short stories that were eventually compiled in the collection "Twice-Told Tales." His most famous work, "The Scarlet Letter," was published in 1850. When he met Herman Melville, he began writing "The House of Seven Gables" (1851), soon followed by his novel "The Blithedale Romance" (1852) ? a thinly disguised critique of Brook Farm. When college friend Franklin Pierce was elected to the presidency, Hawthorne was asked to take a position as US Consul in England. During his time in Europe, Hawthorne traveled to Rome where he was inspired to write his novel, "The Marble Faun" (1860). Hawthorne died in an Inn in 1864 while on a tour of the White Mountains in New Hampshire where he had traveled with Pierce.?

(AP) ? Anderson Cooper revealed on Monday that he is gay, ending years of reluctance to talk about his personal life in public.

The CNN journalist wrote in an online letter that he had kept his sexual orientation private for personal and professional reasons, but came to think that remaining silent had given some people a mistaken impression that he was ashamed.

"The fact is, I'm gay, always have been, always will be, and I couldn't be any more happy, comfortable with myself and proud," he wrote in the letter, published by Andrew Sullivan of the Daily Beast.

Cooper, the son of Gloria Vanderbilt, had long been the subject of rumors about his sexual orientation. He said that in a perfect world, it wouldn't be anyone's business, but that there is value in "standing up and being counted."

"I still consider myself a reserved person and I hope this doesn't mean an end to a small amount of personal space," he wrote. "But I do think visibility is important, more important than preserving my reporter's shield of privacy."

CNN said it would not comment, and that Cooper was on assignment and there were no plans for Cooper to discuss it on the air.

Few national television news reporters have publicly acknowledged being gay, with MSNBC's Rachel Maddow and CNN's Don Lemon perhaps the best known.

Cooper's show, "Anderson Cooper 360," received an award this year from the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation.

"Even prior to coming out publicly, Anderson's terrific work has raised awareness of inequalities facing LGBT people, said GLAAD President Herndon Graddick. "He's a role model to millions and now will inspire countless others."

Rangers, Rockies on historic paces

With two teams already there and the rest set to hit the halfway point of the season within the next few days, I wanted to look at what kind of pace each team was on. Below are the number of wins each team would finish with given its current pace, plus how that would stack up against the team?s history. As things stand now, there?s one team on pace for its most wins ever and another on pace for its fewest.

AL East
Yankees ? 100 ? most since 2009
Orioles ? 87 ? most since 1997
Red Sox ? 86 ?- fewest since 2001
Rays ? 84 ? fewest since 2009
Blue Jays ? 82 ? most since 2010

AL Central
White Sox ? 86 ? most since 2010
Indians ? 83 ? most since 2007
Tigers ? 80 ? fewest since 2008
Royals ? 74 ? most since 2008
Twins ? 69 ? most since 2010

AL West
Rangers ? 101 ? most ever
Angels ? 90 ? most since 2009
Athletics ? 77 ? most since 2010
Mariners ? 68 ? most since 2009

NL East
Nationals ? 95 ? most since 1979*
Mets ? 87 ? most since 2008
Braves ? 85 ? fewest since 2008
Marlins ? 79 ? most since 2010
Phillies ? 72 ? fewest since 2000

NL Central
Reds ? 89 ? most since 2010
Pirates ? 87 ? most since 1992
Cardinals ? 84 ? fewest since 2007
Brewers ? 75 ? fewest since 2006
Astros ? 66 ? most since 2010
Cubs ? 60 ? fewest since 1981**

NL West
Giants ? 91 ? most since 2010
Dodgers ? 89 ? most since 2009
Diamondbacks ? 81 ? fewest since 2010
Rockies ? 62 ? fewest ever
Padres ? 61 fewest since 1993

*The Expos were 74-40 and on pace to win 105 games when the strike ended the 1994 season.

**The 1981 Cubs went 38-65 in that strike-shortened season, which also works out to 60-win pace. Their last full season under 60 wins was 1966, when they went 59-103.

If the Rangers keep at it, they?ll set a franchise high for victories for the second straight year, topping last year?s total of 96. Before that, their high was 95 win sin 1999.

The Rockies are on pace for their fewest wins, excluding the 1994 strike season (they were on pace for 73 wins that year). Their low total is 67 wins, from both their inaugural season in 1993 and from 2005.

The Yankees and Rangers are both on pace for 100 wins. Only one team, the Phillies, got there last year. No team did in 2010. If the Yankees can do it, it?d be their sixth 100-win season since 1998.

And then there?s the Pirates, on pace for their first .500 season since Barry Bonds left. Their high total since was 79 wins in 1997.

Spearmon cruises in 200 with no controversy

EUGENE, Ore. (AP) ? With a Monday runoff in the women's 100 meters still looming over the U.S. track trials, Wallace Spearmon kept the men's 200 controversy-free with an easy victory.

Spearmon got off to a slow start, but recovered in time to win in 19.82 seconds Sunday at Hayward Field.

His victory ? and his chance for redemption at the London Games after losing the bronze medal to disqualification in Beijing ? was an expected finish to what should have been the conclusion to the trials.

Instead, Allyson Felix and Jeneba Tarmoh will run Monday afternoon to settle a third-place tie in the 100 for the final spot on the U.S. Olympic team.

Felix and Tarmoh finished in a dead heat for third in the 100 more than a week ago behind winner Carmelita Jeter and Tianna Madison, putting the team for the event in limbo. Track officials had no policy in place to resolve it but the next day devised a tiebreaker that included the options of a runoff or a coin flip.

The decision was put off eight days to allow Felix and Tarmoh to focus on the 200, which Felix handily won Saturday night. Tarmoh finished fifth.

On Sunday morning the athletes got together with track officials and decided on the Monday runoff.

USA Track and Field was criticized because there was no tiebreaking policy in the first place and because the matter lingered for so long. It certainly got most of the attention on Sunday as the trials wound to a close.

Wearing his sunglasses, Spearmon overcame his shaky start and finished the 200 well in front of runner-up Maurice Mitchell and Isiah Young.

Spearmon is anxious to erase the bad memories from Beijing, when he was disqualified for a lane violation.

"That's definitely something that's been on my mind since 2008. It's hard to make one Olympic team, go and make the final, step on the line when you thought you had a medal, do about 300 meters of the victory lap and have to live with that," he said. "If I didn't make the team this year, that would've been on my mind the rest of my life ? the chance I could've had. Being able to go back and make my second Olympic team and have a chance at redemption, I don't take my second chances lightly. I'm going to go out there and leave it all on the track.'"

Spearmon was the obvious favorite in the field, which was somewhat diluted when sprinters Justin Gatlin and Tyson Gay decided to pass after securing spots on the Olympic team in the 100. And reigning Olympic 200 bronze medalist Walter Dix didn't run because of a lingering hamstring injury that was apparent in the 100.

Dix's only option for making it to London will be as a member of the 400 relay team.

Shortly after Spearmon claimed his third U.S. title in the event, his good friend Usain Bolt ran the 200 at the Jamaican Trials, finishing second to Yohan Blake. The trio of Blake, Bolt and Spearmon instantly became the favorites going into London.

In other events on Sunday, defending outdoor champion Lashinda Demus won the women's 400 hurdles in 53.98, joining runner-up Georganne Moline and third-place finisher T'Erea Brown on the Olympic team.

On the men's side, Michael Tinsley won the 400 hurdles in 48.33, besting reigning Olympic champion Angelo Taylor and defending Olympic silver medalist Kerron Clement.

Bershawn Jackson, the defending Olympic bronze medalist, fell into the finish but finished fourth.

London will be Taylor's fourth Olympics.

"Not many people make it to their fourth Olympic team, so this is something that I really wanted to do," Taylor said. " I knew the competition I was facing. My main goal was just to stay healthy, and goal No. 2 was just to make the team."

Leo Manzano won the men's 1,500 in 3:35.75, followed by former Oregon Ducks teammates Matthew Centrowitz and Andrew Wheating.

"I knew I needed to stay calm, stay smooth," Manzano said after becoming a two-time Olympian. "There were some times I kind of got caught up, but I just needed to stay calm, bring it back around and just shoot for home."

Morgan Uceny won the women's 1,500 in 4:04.59, earning a place on the team with runner-up Shannon Rowbury and third-place finisher Jenny Simpson.

Simpson has the American record in the 3,000 steeplechase, but switched to the 1,500 and is the reigning world champion in the event.

"The hardest thing about the trials that separates it from any other race you run in your life is that your emotions can slip away from you," Simpson said. "On final stretch, I just felt this overwhelming relief. I didn't even care my time or my place. I was just so happy the three of us were going to make it."

Brittney Reese won her fifth straight U.S. title in the long jump with a leap of 23 feet, 5 1/2 inches. The two-time world champion will be joined in London by runner-up Chelsea Hayes and Janay DeLoach.

Brittany Borman won the javelin with a throw of 201-9. Kara Patterson was second at 196-2, but third-place finisher Kimberly Hamilton did not have the Olympic "A'' standard need to qualify for the games and the third spot on the U.S. team went to fourth-place finisher Rachel Yurkovich.

Maria Michta won the 20,000-meter race walk in 1:34:53.33 for the lone spot on the team in the event, because no one had the "A'' standard.
