LG Spirit 4G arrives on MetroPCS, delivers 4.5-inch display and ICS to the budget-minded crowd

LG Spirit 4G arrives on MetroPCS, delivers 45inch display and ICS to the budgetminded crowd

We are definitely no strangers to seeing MetroPCS bring well-priced, decently-specced Android handsets to market, and we have a feeling that's something potential and current subscribers certainly appreciate. Because, well, who doesn't like choice? With today's LG Spirit 4G launch, MetroPCS continues to expand its LTE-at-a-bargain ideals, announcing a smartphone that carries some pretty decent specs for being contract-free and costing a mere 269 bucks. Naturally, the 4.5-inch, 960 x 540 display is among the Spirit's main highlights, but there's also an unspecified 1.2GHz, dual-core CPU, a 5-megapixel rear shooter capable of 1080p video, and Ice Cream Sandwich, to boot. The carrier's quick to point out that its newly introduced slab is a follow-up to that LG Motion 4G we saw last year, and that it's compatible with those LTE plans which were unveiled earlier this month. It's worth noting that while the LG Spirit 4G's official MSRP is $269, MetroPCS will have it up for grabs, starting today, at the cheaper price of $199 -- that, of course, after a beloved mail-in rebate and for "a limited time" only. You'll find a couple more press shots after the break, and be sure to hit the source link if you're interested in grabbing one of these for yourself.

Excessive Alcohol Use When You?re Young Could Have Lasting Impacts on Your Brain

Jan. 30, 2013 ? There is growing evidence for the lasting impact of alcohol on the brain.? Excessive alcohol use accounts for 4% of the global burden of disease, and binge drinking particularly is becoming an increasing health issue. A new review article published in Cortex highlights the significant changes in brain function and structure that can be caused by alcohol misuse in young people.

Functional signs of brain damage from alcohol misuse in young people mainly include deficits in visual learning and memory as well as executive functions. These functions are controlled by the hippocampus and frontal structures of the brain, which are not fully mature until around 25 years of age. Structural signs of alcohol misuse in young people include shrinking of the brain and significant changes to white matter tracts.

Age of first use may be considered to trigger alcohol misuse. According to the researchers however, changing the legal drinking age is not the answer. In Australia the legal drinking age is 18, three years earlier than in the US. Despite the difference in legal drinking age, the age of first use (and associated problems) is the same between the two countries.

Instead, the authors stressed the need for early intervention, by identifying markers and thresholds of risky drinking behaviour at an early stage, while individuals are in vulnerable stages of brain development.

10 Different Styles of Furniture ? Home Improvement, Garden ...

Gothic furniture was heavily carved and decorated, characterized by columns, cuts and interlacing extravagant. However, this movement was the furniture style of practice, and so was often uncomfortable. The style originated in France in the 12th century and lasted until the 16th century. The Renaissance period began in France in the 13th century and lasted until the 17th century. Furniture styles would generally include works of art inspired by the Bible and is greatly influenced by Italian artists such as Michelangelo. Towards the end of the movement, geometric shapes are more obvious. Tudor furniture was very high and carved with lots of straight lines.

He was influenced by the Renaissance and Gothic throughout Europe. The Tudor period lasted from about 1485 to 1603. Replacing the Tudor Jacobean furniture is mainly made from oak and legs on the tables and chairs were often twisted. Although this style was uncomfortable at first, later Jacobean furniture was upholstered. Period lasted from around 1603 to 1649. The movement began in 1890 and ended in 1910. As Rococo, Art Nouveau began in France, but spread to other countries to reach the United States. This type of furniture is characterized by simple but quality craftsmanship using a lightweight material such as plywood. Scandinavian furniture is most famous for its high level of mass production.

A style developed in North America in the 17th century by early American settlers, with influences from all over the world, especially in Europe. Craftsman style is characterized by a fine job, but not too flowery famous communal identity of the manufacturer or ethnicity. In general, a craftsman is a craftsman who works on commission, taking pride in the quality of work, but working with the specifications of the Commissioner in terms of creative detail. Art Nouveau went against the grain of the Victorian era, at the turn of the 20th century. This style is characterized by smooth curved lines and smooth transitions in the form. It uses organic forms as a source of inspiration for the design rather than just ornamentation. Typically, Art Nouveau curves begin a large S-curve that ends quickly, whip like tail.

This style furniture was excessive, elaborate, and fanciful and makes use of curves. Rococo was popular during the first half of the 18th century, first in France and later in other European countries, including Germany. The style was revived in the mid 19th century, when it became popular to collect furniture from the 18th century Rococo. Influenced by the archaeological discoveries of the 18th century in countries such as Greece and Italy, neoclassical furniture began in 1750 and lasted until 1880. Rectangles and bold, straight lines were replacing the curved forms of the Rococo style. Art Nouveau style furniture and delicate flowers often featured long lines and curves. Furniture would sometimes include pictures, women?s organizations, the flowers and leaves were commonplace.

Qualcomm Q1 2013 earnings: $1.91 billion in profit on revenues of $6 billion

The folks in San Diego are making it rain once again, as Qualcomm has just announced its earnings for the quarter with $6 billion in revenues, which represents a 29 percent year-over-year increase and a new record for the firm. It seems the company's Snapdragon chips are everywhere you look these days, and it should come as no surprise that Qualcomm also hauled in a profit of $1.91 billion, which is a 36 percent hike over the previous year. Seeing that the company is so well off, it's also announced a cash dividend payment of $428 million that will go back to shareholders, along with stock repurchases in the amount of $250 million. In case you were wondering, Qualcomm managed to push 182 million of its SoC's out the door during Q1, which represents a 17 percent year-over-year increase. With the Snapdragon 800 due by mid-year, we've a feeling that it'll keep raining in San Diego for some time -- even if the nice weather says otherwise.

Facebook Killed Off 37% Of Spammers Since June 2012

Shirtless Tool Friend RequestIf you've ever gotten a fake friend request, you know Facebook has spammers. But it's winning the fight against them. Facebook's estimate of the total percentage of monthly users that are "undesirable" or spammer accounts dropped to 0.9 percent from 1.5 percent in June 2012. That means there's only around?9.5 million of these trouble-makers on the site, down 37 percent from 15.1 million in mid-2012.

Northair Intersects 765 g/t Silver over 6.5 Metres at La Cigarra Project, Mexico

VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA -- (Marketwire) -- 01/30/13 -- International Northair Mines Ltd. (TSX VENTURE: INM) (the "Company" or "Northair") is pleased to announce drill results from nine core holes at the San Gregorio Zone and two core holes at the Las Carolinas Zone completed on its La Cigarra silver project ("Property") located in north central Mexico.

"We continue to be extremely pleased with the drill results from the Property," said Fred Hewett, President and CEO of Northair. "The 765 g/t silver intersection from hole CC-12-135 in the San Gregorio Zone is the highest silver grade (over widths greater than 5 metres), reported to date. These results, combined with previous drilling, indicate that a high grade silver zone is being delineated in the northern half of San Gregorio. This higher grade zone currently has a strike of 300 metres and remains open with significant opportunity to expand with further drilling."

Drilling Discussion

San Gregorio Zone:

Four (4) holes, CC-12-131, 133, 135 and 138 were completed in the northern half of the San Gregorio Zone to test for a northern continuation of mineralization previously encountered in holes CC-11-026 and CC-12-083 on sections 0+00 and 0+50S, respectively.

-- On section 1+00N, hole CC-12-131 intersected 13.9 metres grading 83.7 g/t silver and extended the silver mineralization down dip from CRC-01- 010. The zone can now be traced over 320 metres below surface. -- On section 1+50N, hole CC-12-138 intersected 24.2 metres grading 150.9 g/t silver and extended the silver mineralization 90 meters down dip from CC-12-085. The zone can now be traced at least 320 metres from surface. -- On section 2+00N, hole CC-12-135 intersected 6.5 metres grading 765.0 g/t silver, 13.10 metres grading 32.2 g/t silver, 8.00 metres grading 178.0 g/t silver and extended the silver mineralization 100 metres down dip from CC-12-088. The zone on this section can now be traced at least 300 metres down dip from surface. -- On section 4+00N, hole CC-12-133 intersected 2.9 metres grading 195.9 g/t silver and 21.2 metres grading 61.5 g/t silver and extended the silver mineralization 90 metres down dip from CC-11-047. The zone can now be traced at least 180 metres from surface.

In addition, holes CC-12-136 & CC-12-137 were positioned in the central part of the San Gregorio Zone to test the down dip continuation of the zone on sections 0+00 and 0+50S where mineralization was open to depth. Both holes intersected only narrow mineralized intervals and it now appears that the down dip continuation of the wider mineralized interval is truncated by a west dipping fault.

In the southern proportion of the San Gregorio Zone two holes were drilled on section 4+50S up dip of CC-11-044 to establish the thickness of the zone towards the surface. Hole CC-12-129 showed that mineralization extends 70 metres up dip from CC-11-044. Hole CC-12-130 failed to intersect significant mineralization and is believed to have been collared in the footwall of the zone, indicating controls to mineralization here are steeper than predicted.

Las Carolinas Zone:

Two holes were drilled at Las Carolinas to provide infill data.

-- On section 1+00N, hole CC-12-139 was positioned to test the down dip projection of a higher grade zone identified on sections 1+00N and 1+50N. CC-12-139 intercepted 43.9 metres grading 49.6 g/t silver including 9.90 metres grading 173.1 g/t silver. This hole extended silver mineralization 80 metres down dip from CC-12-104, which reported 66.8 metres grading 80.2 g/t silver. The silver zone here can now be traced at least 240 metres below surface. -- On section 4+00N, hole CC-12-134 was designed to test the down dip extension of CC-12-102. CC-12-134, returned 1.0 metre grading 229.1 g/t silver, 1.7 metres grading 20.3 g/t silver and 30.65 metres grading 23.4 g/t silver. These results indicate that the mineralized system here shows no sign of weakening at depth.

2012 Drilling Notes

Data collected from all drill campaigns within the Las Carolinas and San Gregorio area has defined a mineralized system measuring 2.4 kilometres in length and open. This data will be used to calculate the Property's initial NI 43-101 compliant resource estimate due in Q1 2013.

To date, Northair has released the results of all 139 core holes completed on the Property. Since the first drill program was initiated on the property in 2010, the Company has completed 23,876 meters of drilling in 15 reverse circulation holes and 139 HQ sized core holes.

Additional drilling is anticipated in Q2 2013 to further explore the La Cigarra Resource area, which remains open in all directions; and to test district targets recently generated from the Company's ongoing field programs.

Sampling and QA/QC

All technical information for the La Cigarra exploration program is obtained and reported under a formal quality assurance and quality control (QA/QC) program. Samples are taken under the direction of qualified geologists and stored in sealed bags. Samples are delivered by the Company via courier to ALS Minerals ("ALS") in Chihuahua and Inspectorate America Corporation ("Inspectorate") in Durango City. In both cases the samples are dried, crushed and pulverized with the pulps being sent airfreight for analysis by ALS to Vancouver B.C. and by Inspectorate to Vancouver B.C. or Reno, Nevada. Systematic assaying of standards and blanks are performed for precision and accuracy. Analysis for silver, zinc, lead and copper and related trace elements was done by ICP four acid digestion, with gold analysis by 30 gram fire assay with an AA finish.

About the La Cigarra Silver Project

The La Cigarra Project is located in the state of Chihuahua along the eastern fringes of the Sierra Madre Occidental in Mexico. Local topography is gentle with good road access to the major city of Parral, located 26 kilometres to the southeast. The 32,064 hectare property position controls an emerging mineral district with permissive geology and numerous historical mine workings. Of potential economic significance is the San Gregorio/Las Carolinas area, currently defined by drilling over a strike length measuring 2.4 kilometres. Over the short term the Company's objectives include the completion of its initial resource study and the definition of additional drill targets for testing in the upcoming field season.

Chevron says it has paid $10 million after fire

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) -- Chevron Corp. has paid about $10 million and has begun what's being termed "corrective actions" after a fire last summer at its Richmond refinery, company officials said.

In a report filed with the Contra Costa County Health Services Department on Monday, the San Ramon, Calif.-based oil giant said it has paid the money in connection to nearly 24,000 claims from residents and in compensation to area hospitals and local government agencies in Richmond and in Contra Costa County.

Most of the $10 million went to hospitals for medical exams and treatment immediately following the incident, Chevron spokesman Sean Comey said in an email to The Associated Press.

The payments follow a fire in a crude oil unit of the refinery on Aug. 6 that sent a cloud of gas and black smoke over residential areas, prompting thousands of people to seek medical treatment, with many complaining of eye irritation and breathing problems.

Federal investigators have said that Chevron firefighters responding to a small leak at the facility may have accidentally punctured a main pipeline that sparked the massive blaze.

A metallurgical report showed the 40-year-old pipe that failed, causing the leak, was initially weakened by the heavy sulfur content of the crude oil being pumped through it. After a small leak sent hydrocarbons into the air, a small flash fire was put out. But a larger gash in the pipe released a bigger cloud of flammable gas, leading to a larger fire.

Chevron is also strengthening its reliability programs for piping and equipment, updating protocols on how crews respond to new leaks and is increasing employee training, the company said in its report.

The crude oil unit where the fire erupted remains closed as crews work on repairs, but Chevron officials expect to restart the unit by the end of March, Comey said.

Chevron also plans to release the results of the company's internal investigation before restarting the unit, Comey said.

Majority of Americans support dozens of policies to strengthen U.S. gun laws

Jan. 28, 2013 ? The majority of Americans support a broad array of policies to reduce gun violence, according to a new national public opinion survey conducted by researchers at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. These policies include: requiring universal background checks for all gun sales (supported by 89 percent); banning the sale of military-style semiautomatic assault weapons (69 percent); banning the sale of large-capacity ammunition magazines (68 percent); and prohibiting high-risk individuals from having guns, including those convicted of a serious crime as a juvenile (83 percent) and those convicted of violating a domestic-violence restraining order (81 percent). Americans also support a range of measures to strengthen oversight of gun dealers and various policies restricting gun access by persons with mental illness.

The national survey, which over-sampled gun owners and non-gun owners living in homes with guns to allow for more precise estimates of opinions among these groups, was fielded in January, 2013, several weeks following the mass school shooting in Newtown, Connecticut. The majority of Americans support all but 4 of the 31 gun policies asked about in the survey. For many policies, there was little difference in support between gun owners and non-gun-owners.

"This research indicates high support among Americans, including gun owners in many cases, for a wide range of policies aimed at reducing gun violence," said lead study author Colleen Barry, PhD, MPP, an associate professor at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. "These data indicate broad consensus among the American public in support of a comprehensive approach to reducing the staggering toll of gun violence in the United States."

At the same time, the researchers fielded a second national survey to assess Americans' attitudes about mental illness. This survey reveals ambivalent attitudes among the American public about mental illness. Sixty-one percent of respondents favor greater spending on mental health screening and treatment as a strategy for reducing gun violence, and 58 percent said discrimination against people with mental illness is a serious problem. Yet, almost half of respondents thought people with serious mental illness are more dangerous than others, and two-thirds expressed unwillingness to have a person with a serious mental illness as a neighbor.

"In light of our findings about Americans' attitudes toward persons with mental illness, it is worth thinking carefully about how to implement effective gun-violence-prevention measures without exacerbating stigma or discouraging people from seeking treatment," added Barry.

The results of both surveys are summarized in "After Newtown -- Public Opinion on Gun Policy and Mental Illness," published online on January 28th in The New England Journal of Medicine.

Gun violence claims 31,000 U.S. lives each year in the U.S., and the rate of firearms homicides in America is 20 times higher than it is in other economically advanced nations.

Johns Hopkins researchers conducted this study using the survey research firm GfK Knowledge Networks. There were 2,703 respondents in the gun policy survey and 1,530 respondents in the mental illness survey.

"Not only are gun owners and non-gun-owners very much aligned in their support for proposals to strengthen U.S. gun laws," said co-author Daniel Webster, ScD, MPH, director of the Johns Hopkins Center for Gun Policy and Research, "but the majority of NRA members are also in favor of many of these policies."

The survey found that 74 percent of NRA members support requiring universal background checks for all gun sales; 64 percent of NRA members support prohibiting people who have been convicted of two or more crimes involving alcohol or drugs within a 3-year period from having a gun, and 70 percent of NRA members want a mandatory minimum sentence of 2 years in prison for a person convicted of knowingly selling a gun to someone who is not legally allowed to own one.

"These data indicate that the majority of Americans are in favor of policy changes that would ultimately increase safety," said Jon Vernick, JD, MPH, co-director of the Johns Hopkins Center for Gun Policy and Research and a co-author of the study. "This consensus should propel forward comprehensive legislation aimed at saving lives."

Scores hurt as Islamists take to Bangladesh streets over tribunal

DHAKA (Reuters) - At least 50 people including policemen were injured in Bangladesh on Monday as Islamist activists protested against the prosecution of their leaders on charges stemming from a war of independence 40 years ago, police and witnesses said.

Protesters set off crude explosives and threw bricks at police who tried to disperse them with teargas, batons and some shots in the air, witnesses said.

"The Islamists vandalized dozens of vehicles and set fire to two buses in Motijheel commercial area and other places in the city," a police officer said.

Islamist party spokesman were not available for comment.

Police detained about 20 activists, reporters on the scene said, and the disturbances disrupted traffic on city-centre roads. Similar protests broke out in the northern town of Rajshahi, Chittagong in the southeast and several other towns across the country.

Bangladesh became part of Pakistan at the end of British rule in 1947 but it broke away from Pakistan in 1971 after a war between Bangladeshi nationalists, who were backed by India, and Pakistani forces.

Some factions in Bangladesh opposed the break with Pakistan.

A Bangladeshi war crimes tribunal began work in mid-2011 to investigate some of the violence during the nine-month war when up to three million people were killed and thousands of women were raped.

Last week, the tribunal reached its first verdict, sentencing a former member of the Jamaat-e-Islami party and a popular Islamic preacher, Abul Kalam Azad, to death in absentia.

Azad has been missing since April last year but the government says it is trying to find him.

Azad was charged with collaborating with Pakistani forces in the murder of Hindus, a minority in the majority-Muslim state. In one case, he was accused of killing at least 12 Hindus while shooting indiscriminately along with Pakistani soldiers.

Jamaat has been accused of helping the Pakistani army in acts of violence, which it denies.

Another 11 people, nine of them Jamaat leaders, are facing trial.

"TRIED AND PUNISHED"

In Dhaka, the protesters said the trials were politically motivated and should be stopped, witnesses said.

In Rajshahi, protesters chanted "we shall avenge the harassment of our leaders", said an official in the town.

Human Rights Watch has said the law under which the accused were being tried fell short of international standards of due process. It cited defense lawyers, witnesses and investigators as saying they had been threatened during the trial.

The ruling party of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who set up the tribunal, has denied the accusations of bias.

Mohammad Nasim, a senior leader of Hasina's Awami League party and a former home minister, brushed off the protesters' calls for the tribunal to stop and said those responsible for abuses during the independence war had to face justice.

"They won't be able to stop it through acts of violence and lawlessness," Nasim said.

Hasina has also said those trying to derail the work of the tribunal would not succeed.

"Most of the Bangladeshi people want the war criminals tried and punished," Hasina said on Sunday.

Euro, shares stall as investors turn cautious

LONDON (Reuters) - Rallies in European shares and the single currency stalled on Monday after strong gains last week as investors awaited confirmation that financial market conditions and the outlook for the euro area have improved.

Investor sentiment rose strongly on Friday after data showed European banks would repay more than expected of the emergency loans they borrowed from the European Central Bank (ECB) and that business sentiment in Germany was improving sharply.

A solid start to the corporate earnings season has also helped send many equity indexes to pre-financial crisis highs, with the Standard & Poor's 500 index closing last week at its highest level in over five years.

In the equity markets Europe's FTSEurofirst 300 index <.fteu3> shed 0.1 percent in early trade to 1,173.87 points, leveling off near its highest level for almost two years, though traders said there was still strong underlying demand.

"All European benchmarks are at their 2012-2013 highs. Every time there's even a slight pull-back, the buying pressure comes in," Aurel BGC chartist Gerard Sagnier said.

The market's cautious mood on Monday also followed a weaker session in Asia, where falls in technology companies saw the MSCI's broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan <.miapj0000pus> drop 0.4 percent.

The euro held near an 11-month high against the dollar $1.3440

Meanwhile, German government bond futures, a key gauge of investor sentiment, continued to ease, slipping a further 7 ticks to 142.40 on Monday, and gold is languishing near a two-week low as hopes for an economic recovery worldwide dampen the metal's appeal as a safe haven.

Investors are keenly awaiting the ECB's monthly data on bank lending to companies and consumers, due later, for confirmation that growth is returning to the economy. Italy will also provide a test of investor sentiment when it auctions almost 7 billion euros ($9.4 billion) of 2-year and 5-year bonds.

However, the main focus for investors this week will be on the U.S., where the Federal Reserve's Open Market Committee meets on Tuesday and Wednesday, and where the nonfarm payrolls report is due out on Friday.

Oil prices were being held in check by the events coming up in the U.S., with Brent crude unchanged at $113.28 a barrel, while U.S. crude rose 17 cents to $96.05 after seven straight weekly gains - the longest such streak since early 2009.

Verizon modifying prepaid plans Feb 1 with new $60 500MB tier

Android Central

Verizon doesn't put much focus on its prepaid plans, but according to a leaked document obtained by PhoneArena it will be dropping prices on prepaid offerings starting February 1st. Verizon's current offering is at $80 for smartphones, with unlimited talk/text and 2GB of data during its double data promotion. When the new plans take effect next week, the $80 plan is going away, making room for two new tiers at $60 and $70. The lower tier will offer 500MB of data, the higher 2GB, both with unlimited talk and text.

The document specifically says $80 plan users will be grandfathered in, but considering the new price structure there's no reason to stay on it. Users wanting more than 2GB of data will be paying $20 per 1GB overage, which is $5 more than adding an extra 1GB to a postpaid plan. Also remember that Verizon's prepaid plans are 3G only for the time being. This is still a good option for a select set of people though, so we're glad to see Verizon drop its prices a bit. Stick around after the break to see the document and details of the new plans.

91% Lincoln

All Critics (215) | Top Critics (43) | Fresh (195) | Rotten (20)

It's the most remarkable movie Steven Spielberg has made in quite a spell, and one of the things that makes it remarkable is how it fulfills those expectations by simultaneously ignoring and transcending them.

Lincoln paints a powerful and compelling portrait of the man who has become an icon. We don't need to see more of his life to understand how rare a figure he was - this window is more than sufficient.

Lincoln offers proof of what magic can happen when an actor falls in love with his character. Because as great as Day-Lewis has been in his many parts, he has never seemed quite so smitten.

The film masterfully captures the dual dilemmas facing the president in the final months of his life: how to bring the war between the states to an end, and how to eradicate slavery, once and for all.

Lincoln is a stirring reminder that politics can be noble. Might there be a lesson here for today's shrill D.C. discourse? 'Tis a consummation devoutly to be wished.

Day-Lewis' voice is thin and reedy, which jibes with historical accounts but subverts our expectations. His attitude makes listeners lean in, and so do we, magnetized by his kindly reserve.

Against the odds, Spielberg makes something genuinely exciting of the backstage wheedling.

A historic epic from Steven Spielberg carries a lot of baggage, but he surprises us with a remarkably contained approach to an iconic figure. What's most unexpected is that this is a political drama, not a biopic.

[Spielberg is] a man on a mission. And his not so secret weapon is Day-Lewis, an actor so charismatic it's hard to think clearly while he's on screen.

Perhaps this is a rose-tinted view of Lincoln - he comes across as more living saint than man - but as cinema, it is powerful, gripping and thoroughly entertaining.

Spielberg is always a professional, and the film is never less than well-crafted.

By stepping into history without fear, favour or any overfamiliar biopic folly, Lincoln, handsome, often thrilling, and movingly human, goes into history as a major movie achievement.

A rousing, rigorous and morally complex legal procedural more than a trad biopic. And all the better for it.

his is a warm, celebratory film, handsomely shot, with a subtle, sympathetic central performance from Day-Lewis, and tremendous support from Tommy Lee Jones ...

Spielberg's plodding camera endlessly tracks and circles Day-Lewis in complete reverence, while veteran composer John Williams delivers yet another repetitive Jurassic Extra-Terrestrial score.

What a feat from Day-Lewis: the nearest thing a 21st-century biopic can get to a seance.

It's tiresome to describe Day-Lewis as brilliant, so let's push the boat out: his Lincoln is absolutely wonderful.

A thoughtful and thought-proving picture.

Lincoln reminds you how little has actually changed in one-and-a-half centuries - presidents still have to worry about the war dead while trying to create a better life for the fractured living.

Impressively directed and superbly written, this is an absorbing and enjoyable political drama with an Oscar-worthy central performance from Daniel Day-Lewis.

Daniel Day-Lewis gives yet another performance for the ages in Steven Spielberg's admirably literate, thoroughly charming biopic.

Lincoln has been dismissed by some as merely 'people in rooms talking'. That may be true, but what people. And what talking.

Fans of great writing, superb acting, beautiful photography and the rousing scores of John Williams are going to lap this one up.

While Lincoln is high-minded and classy, it plays like a dry history lesson, despite a typically immaculate turn from Daniel Day-Lewis. In short, we have the definitive performance of Abraham Lincoln, but not the definitive movie.

'Lincoln' works as a snapshot of a great man without ever slipping into a portrait of sainthood.

This is the quietest of [Spielberg's] recent films, with an equally unobtrusive, delicately-crafted, totally absorbing performance from Daniel Day-Lewis.

Apple drops supplier over underage labor violations, hails 'high compliance' with reducing excessive work hours

Apple severs relationship with supplier over underage labor violations

Apple's latest Supplier Responsibility Report has just been published, detailing 393 audits focused on the plants and suppliers that help make all that hardware. The audit number is a 72 percent increase in what it covered in its last annual report, while Apple was also quick to highlight its contracting companies' high compliance (92 percent) with a maximum 60-hour work week. Senior vice president of operations Jeff Williams told Reuters that underage workers and limiting working hours were two of the most challenging issues it faced in its supplier audits. Apple decided to end business relations with component maker Guangdong Real Faith Pingzhou Electronics over underage labour issues. "We go deep in the supply chain to find it," said Williams. "And when we do find it, we ensure that the underage workers are taken care of, the suppliers are dealt with."

Flower-eating goat cleared of vandalism

SYDNEY (AP) ? Gary the flower-eating goat's graze with Australian police has ended with his comedian owner getting the last laugh in court.

A Sydney judge ruled Wednesday that neither the goat nor his owner could be found guilty of vandalism over an August incident when Gary decided to snack on a flowerbed outside a city museum.

Police at the time leveled a fine of 440 Australian dollars ($465) against owner Jim Dezarnaul, a comedian known as Jimbo Bazoobi.

But man and goat got their day in court, with Gary arriving resplendent in a colorful hat on Wednesday. The brown-and-white goat didn't testify, but he had his own lawyer.

Owner Dezarnaul said the case serves as a lesson to overzealous authorities, "and that's 'Don't bite off more than you can chew."

Still no timetable for returning Boeing 787 to flight

TOKYO/WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Japanese regulators have joined their U.S. counterparts in all but ruling out overcharged batteries as the cause of recent fires on the Boeing Co 787 Dreamliner, which has been grounded for a week with no end in sight.

Solving the battery issue has become the primary focus of the investigation, though the head of the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration said on Wednesday there are still no firm answers as to the cause and no clear timetable yet for returning the plane to flight.

Meanwhile, as deliveries of the cutting-edge passenger jet back up, a key Chinese customer lamented the delays and said its growth plans were being hampered by its inability to get the planes on time.

Regulators grounded the Dreamliner on January 16 after a series of safety incidents, including battery fires on planes in the United States and Japan. The Japanese incident forced a plane to make an emergency landing.

Last weekend the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board said the fire on a Japan Airlines Co Ltd 787 in Boston was not due to excess voltage, and on Wednesday, Japanese officials all but ruled it out for the incident on an All Nippon Airways Co Ltd plane there.

"On the surface, it appears there was no overcharging," said Norihiro Goto, chairman of the Japan Transport Safety Board, at a media briefing.

"The fact that such electrical system-related incidents would occur consecutively, purely from my perspective, could not have been expected. We are finding it difficult trying to figure out what kind of investigative stance we should take."

Late Wednesday, the NTSB said more tests are underway on the battery damaged in the Boston fire, including CT scans of the individual cells. The board's chairman, Deborah Hersman, is due to provide a fuller update Thursday.

The investigation has also renewed scrutiny on the FAA's 2007 decision to let Boeing use a highly flammable battery technology on the 787. A U.S. Senate committee will hold a hearing in coming weeks to examine aviation safety oversight and the FAA's decision, a congressional aide said on Tuesday.

NO TIMETABLE

While the NTSB and JTSB hunt for a solution to the battery question, there is also an open issue around fuel leaks on the Dreamliner. In early December, U.S. officials warned of a manufacturing fault with fuel lines, and earlier this month a JAL plane in Boston leaked before takeoff.

Industrial manufacturer Eaton Corp said Wednesday it was cooperating with investigators looking at the fuel leaks.

"Without speaking about either the incident or investigation, I can tell you that we do supply pumps and valves to the program," a spokeswoman said.

The 787 program was already years behind schedule before last week's grounding, which means Boeing cannot deliver newly manufactured planes to customers. Boeing's chief 787 engineer, Mike Sinnett, told an aviation conference in Dublin he could not say when that would change.

"I can't really say anything about the timeframe of the investigation. The NTSB is really the only authorized authority in the U.S. to talk about this investigation and they made some recent statements, but I can't speculate on timeframe," Sinnett said Wednesday in remarks made by phone from Seattle.

U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood, the country's top transportation official, said Wednesday the goal was to return the 787 to service as soon as possible but that the government would not rush the plane back either.

"We are working diligently with Boeing to figure out the problem and find a solution. Our goal is to get this done as quickly as possible, but we must be confident that the problems are solved before we can move forward," LaHood told the Aero Club of Washington, an aviation advocacy group.

FAA Administrator Michael Huerta, appearing at the same event, said the review was looking at the 787's certification, manufacturing and assembly processes, and that he could not speculate on an end date.

CHINA DELAYS

For at least one Chinese customer, the uncertainty about the Dreamliner's production and delivery schedule has meant delays in launching new routes.

"Frankly, it's a little disappointing the aircraft has been delayed so many times," said Chen Feng, chairman of Hainan Airlines Co Ltd parent HNA Group, in an interview at the World Economic Forum in Davos. "We still think it's a good aircraft, but this has had some effect on our planning."

Hainan has 10 of the planes on order.

The grounding of the Dreamliner, an advanced carbon-composite plane with a list price of $207 million, has already forced Japan's ANA to cancel 151 domestic and 26 international flights scheduled for January 23-28, affecting more than 21,000 passengers, the airline said on Monday.

ANA, which flies the most Dreamliners of any airline, is due to announce further flight cancellation plans on Thursday. The airline also said it may have to scale back its next two-year business plan because the 787 was to have been such a central part of that forecast.

AIRBUS UNSCATHED

Boeing has already delivered 50 of the 787s to date. Around half of those have been in operation in Japan, but airlines in India, South America, Poland, Qatar and Ethiopia, as well as United Airlines in the United States, are also flying the plane.

Boeing's main competitor, EADS, said on Wednesday it did not expect the problems with the 787 to affect the certification of its own rival plane, the Airbus A350.

"We will do what is needed to avoid the same problems," EADS strategy chief Marwan Lahoud told France's Radio Classic.

Airbus has said it hopes to achieve the maiden flight of the carbon-composite A350 by the middle of this year.

Prostate cancer lifetime risk trebles in 25 years

Boys born in 2015 will have almost three times the risk of being diagnosed with prostate cancer at some point during their lives than those born in 1990.

Latest figures from Cancer Research UK show that the lifetime risk of prostate cancer will rise from five per cent (1 in 20) for boys born in 1990 to just over 14 per cent (1 in 7) for boys born in 2015.

This is largely due to increased use of the Prostate Specific Antigen Test (PSA). This test detects a wide variety of prostate cancers, including those which will never be life-threatening, as well as aggressive forms of the disease, but unfortunately, it does not distinguish between the two.

PSA testing has rapidly boosted the number of men being diagnosed with the disease. Today, around 41,000 men per year are diagnosed with prostate cancer in the UK ? up from around 15,000 men per year 25 years ago.

But the rise in prostate cancer diagnoses isn't just because of increased testing. Higher numbers of prostate cancer cases are also due to more men living to an older age, when the disease is most likely to develop. ?

The good news is that death rates from prostate cancer in the UK are 18 per cent lower than they were 20 years ago. This is likely to be because of improved treatments and PSA tests which can help diagnose cancers earlier, when the chances of survival are greater. Today, around 10,700 men die each year from prostate cancer in the UK.

Research has lead to more widespread and earlier use of hormone treatments prescribed since the early 1990s. More recently, a range of new hormone treatments have been developed to prolong life ? such as abiraterone which was approved by NICE in May 2012 to treat patients with advanced disease, and which is a drug which Cancer Research UK scientists helped to develop.

Professor Malcolm Mason, Cancer Research UK's prostate cancer expert, said: "We're detecting more cases of prostate cancer than ever before. And we're carrying out an intensive amount of research to find better methods than PSA to distinguish between the minority of cases that are life threatening and do need treatment ? the vipers ? from the majority of cases that don't ? the grass snakes. But there is much more to be done.

"Targeting the tests at men who have a higher risk of developing prostate cancer might be a better approach than screening all men. Research has already saved lives from prostate cancer. But there is uncertainty over the best approach to treating some forms of the disease. Surgery and radiotherapy - with their potential side effects ? is one option, to be balanced against the option of careful monitoring with regular checkups."

Cancer Research UK's scientists have carried out research that suggests a protein called MSMB (Beta-microseminoprotein) may be better at identifying men at higher risk of developing the disease. But more work is needed to prove if this test could be useful.

Dr Harpal Kumar, Cancer Research UK's chief executive, said: "Thanks to people's generosity, our world-class scientists are leading the way to understand why some cancers are aggressive and others aren't. We need to build on the great progress already made and develop more targeted treatments for those men whose disease is life-threatening. We also need to develop better tests that will help us to know when to leave harmless forms of the disease alone."

4-Strand DNA Structure Found in Cells

Four DNA strands, DNA Four DNA strands come together in this model, built using data from x-ray crystallography. Image: Jean-Paul Rodriguez

From Nature magazine

There is no more iconic image in biology than that of DNA's double-stranded helix, which coils and supercoils on itself to form dense chromosomes.

But a quite different, square-shaped type of DNA structure can easily be created in the laboratory by the folding of synthetic DNA strands rich in guanine, one of the building blocks of DNA. Scientists have long believed that these so-called 'G-quadruplex structures' may occasionally form in the DNA of living cells. A G-quadruplex comprises four guanines from different places along a G-rich strand held together by a special type of hydrogen bonding to form a compact square structure that interrupts the DNA helix.

In a paper published online today in Nature Chemistry, researchers led by Shankar Balasubramanian at the University of Cambridge, UK, provide strong evidence that G-quadruplexes do occur in cells ? and that these unusual structures may have important biological functions.

Protecting the chromosome
The protective tips of chromosomal DNA, known as telomeres, are rich in guanine and so are likely candidates for G-quadruplex structures. In fact, studies in cancer cells have shown that small molecules that bind and stabilize G-quadruplex structures cause DNA damage at telomeres, supporting the argument.

After trawling through human genome data in search of other guanine-rich sequences, some scientists have suggested that quadruplexes could also be created in other areas of the genome involved in regulating genes, particularly some cancer-causing genes.

G-quadruplex visualized
This seems likely to be the case, Balasubramanian and colleagues found. They engineered an antibody that binds tightly and specifically to G-quadruplex structures and does not bind to double-stranded helical DNA. When they incubated the antibody with human cells in culture, they found that it bound to many different sites in the chromosomes, only around a quarter of them in telomeres.

?It?s early days, but if we can map exactly where these G-quadruplex structures pop up in the genome, we may learn how better to control genes or other cellular processes that go awry in diseases like cancer,? he says. ?That?s the long-term vision anyway.??

David Laws MP unveils opportunities for region's construction industry

PRLog (Press Release) - Jan. 21, 2013 - Local MP and Minister of State for Schools and the Cabinet Office, David Laws, recently hosted a business breakfast for 50 key business leaders within the construction industry. The focus was to explore whether Government policies would offer better fortunes for the industry for 2013 and to discuss the future of the ?100billion industry.

The breakfast, held at Yeovil Court Hotel, was run by leading South West accountants, Albert Goodman, in conjunction with Humphries Kirk Solicitors and YHC Hire Solutions.

David Laws MP discussed last year?s financial situation for the construction industry, commenting, ?Undoubtedly, it has been a challenging 12 months, with the Government spending more rebuilding the economy, instead of focusing on key areas such as construction. Banks were encouraged to lend last year, which has resulted in a reduction in lending this year and as a result, some SMEs have downsized their business or folded, specifically in the construction industry.?

On a more positive note, David Laws MP commented, ?For the economy as a whole, a surprising but incredibly important uplift has been creation of more than 1,000,000 new jobs in the private sector market, nationally, since May 2010, which has brought down the unemployment rate.

?A great example of that in the South West is AgustaWestland. Last year, having secured a significant grant from the Government, the company was able to secure more than 4,000 jobs within the region.?

Moving forward, David Laws? predictions for 2013 opened with the view that the new Governor of the Bank of England, Mark Carney (see profile below), who joins from Ottawa, Canada, could be an important step forward in regenerating the economy. He is known for introducing innovative monetary policies and is receptive to new ideas. In recent speeches he has focused on how central banks should help during times of economical downturn.

Looking specifically at the opportunities he sees for the construction industry, drawing reference to the Autumn Statement, David Laws added, ?The Government has transferred ?10million from current spending to capital spending and this is being used on improving transport and infrastructure ? something that is not only a necessity, but will help stimulate economic activity in itself. The Autumn Statement also announced an extra ?1billion for schools, on top of current budgets, which will be used to create classrooms and school buildings for the ever-increasing primary school population ? a great boon for regional construction companies. The need for more housing is also important and this will be a main focus for the Government moving forward.?

The Government is actively supporting the economy and has seen great success already with its ?Funding for Lending? scheme. The Government initiative, set up with the aim to boost lending to businesses and households, allows banks and building societies to borrow from the Bank of England for up to four years, when they lend money to businesses or individuals.

Paul Hake, Partner at Albert Goodman, commented, ?We host these breakfasts in order to support the construction industry in Somerset and Dorset. The key business leaders in the sector are here today with the aim of refreshing relationships and exchanging views about the future.?
