Increase The Worth Of Your Living Space With ... - Energy Efficiency

A fun project to take on is creating a bar in your basement. Homeowners will derive pleasure from designing the bar, as well as actually watching the project unfold before their eyes. No matter how you decide to do it, adding a bar to your home can enhance its value.

Do not sink a whole lot of money into new hardwood flooring, unless you have already consulted with a professional about the condition of existing flooring in your home. You may already have wooden floors that are hidden by old carpet or vinyl flooring that are waiting to be uncovered and refurbished. This can result in you spending less money to wind up with beautiful, high quality floors.

If your home has a deck, there are several things to watch out for that may alert you to needed repairs. Seek for uneven boards in the cracks in the wood. Also, look for dry rot in the deck and do not forget to look for uneven screws and nails.

Try painting stripes on the walls prior to panel installation. Even the most meticulously installed paneling tends to show small areas of the old wall beneath. In order to lessen this showing, measure the meeting point of the panels. Use a color that will match the paneling and paint the areas where the paneling will meet.

Hire a chimney sweep to regularly clean and inspect your chimney. Any fireplace that is used on a regular basis needs an inspection from time to time to make sure the chimney is clean and the airways vent properly. Neglecting this important maintenance can lead to a build-up of unhealthy gases in your home or even a disastrous fire in your chimney itself.

Add motion-detecting lights to your home?s exterior to save money and increase security. Motion sensing lights stay off until they detect motion in their path, and then they turn on automatically. Also, intruders are more wary of lights that turn on because of their movements.

Add newness to any room by adding accessories. A few new pillows or a new wall decoration can create a huge difference in a room. New drapes can also add a little something extra.

If you want to change the design of your kitchen, try out new handles and knobs on your cabinetry. You?ll find it easy to install cabinets, and they can really spice up the way your home looks. If you do add in new knobs, make sure you clean your cabinets so that everything looks better in the end. Simply screw the new knobs on and presto, you?re done!

If you are doing home renovations with the plumbing or near plumbing, turn off the main water supply. Prior to working on any plumbing, make sure you locate and turn off your home?s water source.

Use this tip if you are having problems with hard water. Use a water softener to filter your water. These devices separate the source of the hardness, magnesium and calcium deposits, from the water. You can try different types, such as liquid or tablets. Shop around and find the softener that fits your needs.

If you want to get rid of popcorn ceiling, be sure it?s first tested for asbestos. Asbestos is a dangerous building material that was used in the past and requires removal by only licensed contractors. Because of this, you might need to consider hiring a professional to come in with specialized equipment to handle asbestos removal, if your popcorn ceiling contains any.

You should now have a better idea of what is required to become proficient in home improvement. There are lots of information out there and you must know how to use it. Doing so can give you the home you have always dreamed of.

John Travolta sued by former cruise worker

John Travolta is facing another lawsuit.?

Fabian Zanzi, the former Royal Caribbean employee who threw his own hat into the accusation arena when two masseurs accused the actor of sexual misconduct during respective appointments, has now filed his own lawsuit against Travolta, claiming inappropriate behavior during a cruise back in 2009.?

"This is another ludicrous lawsuit with inane claims," Travolta's attorney, Marty Singer, said in a statement to E! News. "It is obvious that Mr. Zanzi and his lawyers are looking for their 15 minutes of fame."?

The graphically worded, 16-page lawsuit alleges that Travolta approached Zanzi on the afternoon of June 9, 2009.?

The plaintiff states that he was appointed the "Grease" star's personal suite attendant during his cruise and, while delivering room service, Travolta complained of discomfort in his neck.?

View the lawsuit

When Zanzi reached for the neck of the robe, Travolta instead removed the robe and "proceeded to forcefully embrace" Zanzi while naked, the lawsuit continues. Zanzi claims that he "pleaded" with Travolta to let him go, but that the actor didn't do so immediately, engaging in contact that was "nonconsensual, inappropriate, extreme and outrageous."?

The lawsuit also charges that Travolta offered Zanzi $12,000 to keep quiet about the incident, after which Zanzi immediately reported the incident to "at least three" superiors. (The suit does not explicitly state whether Zanzi accepted or refused Travolta's money.)?

Zanzi's lawsuit claims the ship's human resources manager, Lorena Alvarez, instructed him to fill out paperwork regarding what happened, but said that if he was "not bleeding or bruised," he was not eligible to seek treatment "or any other type of attention." He also noted that he requested to fill out the paperwork in his native language, Spanish, but that Alvarez said he must do it in English.?

Afterward, Zanzi claims, he was forced to stay in a room for five days until Travolta left the ship, then was placed on indefinite "sick leave" following the cruise. The suit states that Zanzi pursued his complaint with Royal Caribbean through 2011, but was continuously told to check back at a later time.?

He is asking for unspecified damages for claims of assault and battery and intentional and negligent infliction of emotional distress.?

Travolta's attorney, meanwhile, says he is prepared to fight Zanzi's lawsuit and win.?

"The lawsuit's ridiculous claims are completely contradicted by what Mr. Zanzi told his employer back in 2009 when he was being disciplined for his own violations of company policy," Singer's statement to E! News continued.?

"In his handwritten report three years ago, the only physical contact he claimed occurred was allegedly touching my client's neck. The inappropriate conduct he alleges in his lawsuit is absent from his written report he submitted at the time. That glaring omission speaks volumes.?

"Also calling his credibility into question is his dubious allegation that his employer supposedly restrained him in a room on the cruise ship for five days, yet after that supposedly occurred, Mr. Zanzi continued to work for Royal Caribbean for years, on multiple ships. Now, after waiting three years...Mr. Zanzi has filed this absurd lawsuit.?

"We are confident that my client will prevail on the merits and that he will be completely vindicated in court," Singer concluded.?

Futurity.org ? For super fast data, give light a twist

Twisting light to send data at dramatically increased speeds maybe used to build high-speed satellite communication links or be adapted for use in the fiber optic cables that are used by some Internet service providers. (Credit: "optical fiber" via Shutterstock)

USC (US) ? Twisted beams of light are able to transmit more than 85,000 times more data per second than broadband cable, a new study shows.

The work might be used to build high-speed satellite communication links, short free-space terrestrial links, or potentially be adapted for use in the fiber optic cables that are used by some Internet service providers.

?You?re able to do things with light that you can?t do with electricity,? says Alan Willner, electrical engineering professor at the University of Southern California. ?That?s the beauty of light; it?s a bunch of photons that can be manipulated in many different ways at very high speed.?

As reported in the journal Nature Photonics, Willner and an international team of researchers used beam-twisting ?phase holograms? to manipulate eight beams of light so that each one twisted in a DNA-like helical shape as it propagated in free space.? Each of the beams had its own individual twist and can be encoded with ?1? and ?0? data bits, making each an independent data stream?much like separate channels on your radio.

Their demonstration transmitted the data over open space in a lab, attempting to simulate the sort of communications that might occur between satellites in space. Among the next steps for the research field will be to advance how it can be adapted for use in fiber optics, like those frequently used to transmit data over the Internet.

The team?s work builds on research done by Leslie Allen, Anton Zeilinger, Miles Padgett, and their colleagues at several European universities. ?We didn?t invent the twisting of light, but we took the concept and ramped it up to a terabit-per-second,? Willner says.

Jian Wang, the lead author, left USC after completing this research and is now a professor at the Huazhong University of Science and Technology in China.

Researchers from the US, China, Pakistan, and Israel contributed to the research that was funded by the Defense Advance Research Projects Agency (DARPA) under the InPho (Information in a Photon) program.

The new stars of reggae are nothing like the old ones

The new stars of the reggae scene... are stars

Earthly music just ain't enough for reggae / rock band Echo Movement. In search of extraterrestrial inspiration, they hooked up with researchers at Georgia Tech's Sonification Lab, which specializes in turning ugly numbers into beautiful music. Using data from NASA's Kepler telescope and its search for Earth II, SonLab generated "sequences of sonified musical pitches" from fluctuations in a star's brightness (meet Kepler 4665989). Echo Movement got their loop on and composed a harmony from the sequences, adding a tremolo effect from another star's pattern for a softer sound. Unfortunately, the finished track isn't out til September, but in the meantime you can hear the six-second celestial hook at the source link -- just don't blame us if you get pangs of Nokia-stalgia. Also, if you want to imagine how Echo Movement might use the sample, we've embedded one of their rarer songs -- that doesn't involve Spider-Man's girlfriend -- after the break.

Martha Burk: Dukes v. Wal-Mart One Year Later: Where Do Women Stand?

On June 20, 2011, after a 10-year slog through lower courts, the Roberts Supreme Court reversed the class certification in Dukes v. Wal-Mart, the largest class action in U.S. history -- more than 1.5 million women employees at Walmart stores alleging sex discrimination in promotions and pay. In the year since, the ruling has been touted as a godsend for corporations. It has been cited numerous times by judges as a reason to throw out class actions in such disparate areas as toxics in a neighborhood, overtime pay cases, and insurance overcharges.

The women aren't giving up. Smaller regional suits have been filed (the Supremes essentially said the class was just too big), and lead plaintiff Betty Dukes will appear at a rally in Washington on June 20. Representative Rosa DeLauro is introducing the Equal Employment Opportunity Restoration Act to put some teeth back into the ability to sue for discrimination as a class. 2012-06-12-yourvoicesmallest2.JPGThe bill also makes it clear that merely having a written anti-discrimination policy is not enough. Companies can't write the right words down while continuing with a "good old boy" system of pay and promotion, as the plaintiffs clearly demonstrated in the Walmart case.

Joe Sellers, a partner in the Washington D.C. law firm of Cohen Milstein, was the lead counsel on Dukes, and he's also leading on the new cases against Walmart. Sellers has been recognized as one of the top 10 plaintiffs' employment lawyers in the country, and named by The National Law Journal as one of "The Decade's Most Influential Lawyers" in 2010. I talked to him recently about the Walmart case on my radio show, Equal Time With Martha Burk.

MB: This case was about whether women could sue Walmart as a class. Lower courts said yes, but the Supreme Court said no. Many people don't know exactly what a class action is. How does it differ from an individual case?

JS: Sometimes when the individuals have interests that are sufficiently similar -- such as when they have been subject to the same kind of discriminatory practices as in the Walmart case, then it's appropriate to have it go forward as a class case [individuals can band together to bring one large case].

MB: Now that the Supreme Court has said they can't go forward as a class, what happens to the women? Are Betty Dukes and the others just out of luck?

JS: They're not out of luck. Time permitting an individual woman can bring a charge on her own. We also believe the ruling allows for classes more narrowly drawn than the original, which was a nationwide class. We are developing smaller, regional classes. Two are already pending in California and Texas.

MB: Can you tell us where these will be filed?

JS: Not as yet, but I would say that any woman [who is potentially a litigant] start by going to the website walmartclass.com and filling out the form and leaving a confidential message for the lawyers.

MB: To be a part of this, does a woman have to be working for Walmart now?

JS: No, she has to have been a Walmart employee sometime between the end of 1998 and the present. Deadlines for different states are on the website.

MB: Just to be clear, the Court only ruled that the case couldn't go forward as a class. They didn't actually rule on the discrimination. You had evidence that women held two-thirds of hourly jobs at Walmart, yet were only one third or management, they were paid less than men in the same jobs, and often had more seniority and higher performance ratings.

JS: Very important observation. The Supreme Court clearly did not say whether there was sex discrimination going on. All it ruled was the evidence that was presented was insufficient to justify a nationwide class. It didn't preclude smaller classes, and it certainly didn't rule on whether there was actual discrimination at Walmart. That's one of the reasons for the regional cases. We believe the evidence of discrimination is still very strong.

Egypt Islamists claim presidency as army tightens grip

CAIRO (Reuters) - Egypt's agonised passage from revolution to democracy was in limbo on Monday, as the Muslim Brotherhood claimed victory in a presidential election while the generals who took over from Hosni Mubarak decreed it was they who would keep most power.

The former air force commander running against the Islamist dismissed Mohammed Morsy's self-declared triumph as a bid to "hijack" the election. Ahmed Shafik, who was also Mubarak's last prime minister, said that it was he in fact who was ahead.

As a day of counting, and mutual jibes over violations, wore on, there was no official word on how the two-day run-off went and electoral supervisors warned they may not publish any result until Thursday - prolonging what for many Egyptians has become a wearisome deadlock between a military past and religious future.

Shafik's camp insisted he led by two to four points but even sources in the army, which has fought the Brotherhood through six decades of military rule, indicated they were preparing to accept that Morsy had won Egypt's first free presidential vote.

Whoever emerges as president - and at least one electoral official privately endorsed Morsy's claim to be leading by 52 percent to 48 with the bulk of votes counted - he will find his powers tightly circumscribed by a decree issued by Field Marshal Hussein Tantawi's military council as polls closed on Sunday.

Having last week dissolved the parliament that was elected in January with a thumping Islamist majority, the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces (SCAF) said on Sunday it would now take back the assembly's legislative powers and could also step in to break a deadlock in drafting a new constitution.

Liberals and Islamists called it a "military coup".

"Military Transfers Power, to Military," ran the ironic headline in independent newspaper al-Masry al-Youm.

Tantawi, Mubarak's defence minister for 20 years, promised Egyptians who entrusted him with their revolutionary victory to hand power to civilians by July 1. That pledge, endorsed by the United States, the army's $1.3 billion-a-year sponsor, would be satisfied, a military council member said, with a ceremony to be held by June 30 to swear in the new civilian head of state.

Yet he will be a president who can only appoint a government whose every law must be endorsed by SCAF. A timetable set down for writing a constitution, passing it by referendum and then electing a parliament could leave Tantawi in charge until 2013.

The Brotherhood, however, expressed its joy and defiance on the streets and Morsy, a 60-year-old, U.S.-educated engineer who was a political prisoner under Mubarak, promised to be a leader of all Egyptians - a nod to the many, from Christians to secular liberals to moderate Muslims, who fear intolerant clerical rule.

"Thanks be to God who has guided Egypt's people to the path of freedom and democracy, uniting Egyptians for a better future," Morsy said in a victory speech to supporters in Cairo during which he forswore revenge or the settling of scores.

In a cameo moment that spoke of his lightning journey from obscure apparatchik to national celebrity - he was mocked as the party's "spare wheel" when a more senior figure was barred from the race in April - Morsy was caught on camera before his speech telling an aide to let his family know they would see him on TV.

ISLAMIC FUTURE

Hundreds of flag-waving supporters of the Brotherhood, whose members long suffered torture and death at the hands of the generals, gathered in Cairo's Tahrir Square. It was there that the anti-Mubarak revolt was launched on January 25, 2011, mainly by secular young urbanites, later joined by the Brotherhood.

"Thank God, we have got rid of military rule and the police state," said Mona Issam, one of a group of cheering women clad in long robes and full-face veils. "We hope Morsy takes power from the military council and the army goes back to barracks.

"We lived like strangers in our land under the old regime. We were oppressed and Islam was not the law."

Hosni Qutb, a 45-year-old physician, derided Shafik as the "candidate of Israel", in reference to the military rulers' 33-year-old peace treaty with Egypt's Jewish neighbour. Israel fears growing hostility from Cairo and said an Israeli and two militants were killed in an attack on its border overnight.

However, the crowds hardly attracted notice in the morning rush hour and measured barely a drop compared with the human sea that engulfed central Cairo on February 11 last year when Mubarak fell, pushed aside by generals fearful of losing their own privileges.

Morsy attracted support from many who reject his religious agenda and the imposition of Islamic law but wanted to bar the way to Shafik, 70, whom they see as the heir to the old regime.

As Islamists celebrated, unemployed Mohamed Mahmoud, 28, did not share their joy: "I voted for Morsy but I can't say I'm happy," he said. "I'm still afraid of both and what they may do.

"I don't want an Islamic state or a new Mubarak state."

Political chaos has ravaged a vital tourist trade focused on pyramids and Red Sea beaches and the latest turn of events, by prolonging uncertainty, may further harm the economy. The main stock market index fell 3.4 percent to a five-month low.

"How can you possibly make these huge economic decisions in such circumstances?" says Gabriel Sterne, an economist at London investment banking house Exotix. "Such events as these only serve to undermine confidence and accelerate capital flight."

"SETBACK FOR DEMOCRACY"

The military council's "constitutional declaration", issued under powers it took for itself last year, was a blow to democracy, said many who aired their grievances on social media.

"Grave setback for democracy and revolution," tweeted former U.N. diplomat and Nobel peace laureate Mohamed ElBaradei.

"This decree just makes plain the hegemony of SCAF," said Khaled Ali, an activist lawyer who was eliminated in the first round of presidential voting despite a strong, youthful following. "This decree strips the president of the powers he was elected to have and gives those to the military council, whose members were appointed by the old regime," he said.

The order indicated that the army, which controls swathes of Egypt's economy, has no intention of handing substantial power to its old Islamist adversary and may be hoping that public disillusion with the Brotherhood's performance will reduce its influence on the new constitution and the next parliament.

The Brotherhood has contested the army's power to dissolve the present parliament. It warned of "dangerous days" ahead. But few expect the Islamists, who were not in the vanguard of the revolt and spent much of the past year in uneasy symbiosis with the army, to launch a violent grab for power any time soon.

"This is the beginning of a very tough path," a senior Brotherhood official, Essam el-Haddad told Reuters, "The beginning of it is dealing with the amended constitutional declaration that strips the president of any real powers."

The failure of the new parliament to agree a consensus body to draft a constitution - liberals accuse the Islamists of packing the panel with religious zealots - has left Egyptians picking their way from revolution to democracy through a legal maze while the generals control the map and change it at will.

Under the latest order, writing of the new constitution may pass to a body appointed by the SCAF - if a court rules against the contested panel nominated by the now defunct legislature.

Any new constitution would need approval in a referendum, with a new parliamentary election following. By a timetable contained in the decree, it would take another five months or so to complete the planned "transition to democracy".

However, the experience of the past year has left many Egyptians doubting that the military, and what they call the "deep state" stretching across big business, Mubarak-era judges, security officials and the army, will ever hand over control.

"The military has more power now than it had over the past year and more control over events now that parliament is dissolved," said Said Hirsh, an economist at Capital Economics in London. "The new president will not be able to do much.

"SCAF isn't going to transfer any real power," Marc Lynch, a Middle East expert at George Washington University said on Twitter of the constitutional order. "Back to the beginning."

Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 caught on video bearing Telcel wallpaper

The Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 is rightly so an interesting, and anticipated device. First shown off at Mobile World Congress back in February, what we're seeing here, and ultimately we're supposedly seeing at launch, is something different to the initial device we went hands on with. There's talk of the Note 10.1 going quad-core, as well as there having been a slight design change with a slot for the S-Pen being included now.

We thought the launch was getting closer only to be told that Amazon made a boo-boo. There is though a new, unofficial, video out there on the interwebs, of the Note 10.1 bearing a Telcel wallpaper. If nothing else on that front, it gives a bit of a clue as to one place it'll be heading when it eventually is released.

It's a pretty detailed video, and we won't spoil it for you. All the text is -- expectedly being Telcel anyway -- in Spanish, but reading isn't really necessary. The one spoiler we will throw in, is that at one point in the video, there is clearly a phone dialer on the screen. Absolutely enormous phone anyone?

Lariats: How RNA splicing decisions are made

ScienceDaily (June 17, 2012) ? Lariats are discarded byproducts of RNA splicing, the process by which genetic instructions for making proteins are assembled. A new study has found hundreds more lariats than ever before, yielding new information about how splicing occurs and how it can lead to disease.Tiny, transient loops of genetic material, detected and studied by the hundreds for the first time at Brown University, are providing new insights into how the body transcribes DNA and splices (or missplices) those transcripts into the instructions needed for making proteins.

The lasso-shaped genetic snippets -- they are called lariats -- that the Brown team reports studying in the June 17 edition of Nature Structural & Molecular Biology are byproducts of gene transcription. Until now scientists had found fewer than 100 lariats, mostly by poring over very small selections of introns, which are sections of genetic code that do not directly code for proteins, but contain important signals that direct the way protein-coding regions are assembled. In the new study, Brown biologists report that they found more than 800 lariats in a publicly available set of billions of RNA reads derived from human tissues.

"We used modern genomic methods, deep sequencers, to detect these rare intermediates of splicing," said William Fairbrother, associate professor of biology and senior author of the study. "It's the first ever report of these things being discovered at a genome scale in living cells, and it tells us a lot about this step of gene processing."

That specific step is known as RNA splicing. Like film editors splicing together movie scenes, enzymes cut away the introns to assemble exons that instruct a cell's ribosome to make proteins. The body often has a choice of ways and places to make those cuts. Most of what is known about splicing has come from studying these spliced instructions, said Allison Taggart, a graduate student who is lead author of the study. What's been missing is the data hidden in the lariats, which fall apart shortly after being spliced out, but turn out to predict the body's splicing choices.

Modeling splicing

The key information uncovered in the study, Taggart said, is the location of so-called "branchpoints" on the lariats. Physically, the branchpoint is where the lariat closes on itself to form a loop during the first step of splicing, but its position and proximity to possible splice sites, the researchers learned, reliably relate to where splicing will occur.

After studying the sites of these branchpoints and their relationship to splice sites, the researchers created an algorithmic model that could predict splice sites 95.6 percent of the time. The value of the model is not in identifying splice sites -- those are already well known, Fairbrother said. Instead, the model's accuracy shows that, with the new data from the lariats, scientists have gained a more general understanding of how the body chooses among alternative splicing sites.

"What it does tell us is sets of rules defining the relationship between branchpoints and the chosen splice sites, which gives clues about how the splicing machinery makes decisions," Taggart said. "Certain branchpoint locations can enforce specific splicing isoforms."

Connections to disease

In addition to ferreting out the mechanisms of alternative splicing, the team also studied the connection between branchpoints and disease. They looked through the Human Gene Mutation Database for disease-causing mutations found in introns and compared their newly found branchpoint sequences to those mutations. They found that many relate specifically to branchpoints.

"We saw a sequence motif that looked exactly like a branchpoint sequence motif," she said. "What this tells us is that these mutations are forming at branchpoints and are leading to disease, presumably through causing aberrant splicing by interfering with lariat formation."

In other words, Fairbrother said, it could well be that a consequence of mutations in branchpoints could be disease.

In addition to Taggart and Fairbrother, other authors include Alec DeSimone, Janice Shih, and Madeleine Filloux.

The National Science Foundation and Brown University funded the research, which was performed in part on the OSCAR supercomputing cluster at the University's Center for Computation and Visualization.

Exclusive: Drake Did 'Nothing Wrong' In Club Brawl, Birdman Says

'He's not a reckless guy out there just wildin' out,' Cash Money CEO tells MTV News after Drizzy's altercation with Chris Brown.

ATLANTA — No matter the drama, Cash Money CEO Bryan "Birdman" Williams is riding with his artists. Never one to indulge in rap beef, on Friday (June 15) during an interview with MTV News, Stunna made it clear that he is in full support of Drake in the aftermath of Wednesday night's brawl in a New York City nightclub that involved Chris Brown and members of their respective crews.

"Well, to me, I think n---as got Drake twisted. A lot of n---as be playin', pitty-pattin' with Drake. I don't like that sh--, period," Birdman said to us in an exclusive interview. "Drake is one of us, so if you f---in' with Drake, you f---in' with us, period!"

Birdman wasn't in attendance when the fight broke out at W.I.P. in NYC, but firmly believes the Take Care MC did nothing wrong. Drake alleges he wasn't involved in the melee, which left a number of people injured including one of Brown's bodyguards and NBA player Tony Parker. "To me, Drizzy ain't did nothin' wrong, he ain't done nothin' wrong to nobody. He just doin' great music," Bird said in defense of his artist. "He's not a reckless guy out there just wildin' out; he's a humble kid makin' great music."

Drake Vows To Outdo Summer Jam At New York Show

It's no secret that the #1 Stunna is about his money, and to him, beef is bad for business. "We never been a brand to carry ourselves in any foul manner. None of us, none of the acts," he said of his Cash Money roster. "We've been doin' this, we want to do this for another 20 years."

Still, the CM CEO understands how quickly things can get out of hand. He recalls a time where shootings weren't uncommon between warring factions but now sees those types of altercations as a thing of the past. "It's a different era, and we don't promote that, we're not about that, but I think sometimes sh-- get outta hand, and you just gotta be ready for it," he said. "We did enough of that, so these n---as ain't got to do it."

On Saturday (June 16), rumors of an imminent Drake arrest were circulating on the Net but an NYPD official confirmed to MTV News that were "no arrests" looming, adding that an "investigation is ongoing."

Greeks weigh consequences of pivotal vote

ATHENS (Reuters) - European leaders urged Greece to reject radical leftists who threaten to tear up the terms of a bailout deal should they win an election on Sunday, a result that would send shockwaves through global financial markets.

Riding a wave of anger to rise from obscurity to contender for power, leftist SYRIZA leader Alexis Tsipras, 37, promises to reject the punishing terms of the 130 billion euro ($163.75 billion) bailout if he wins the nail-biter vote on Sunday.

On the right, establishment heir and New Democracy leader Antonis Samaras, 61, says that would send Greece crashing out of the single currency and condemn it to even greater economic calamity.

With the election set to go down to the wire, European leaders weighed in on Saturday, urging Greeks to vote with their heads.

The bailout will not be renegotiated, warned German Chancellor Angela Merkel, whose country's wealth is vital to shoring up its weaker partners in the bloc.

"That's why it's so important that the Greek elections preferably lead to a result in which those that will form a future government say: 'yes, we will stick to the agreements'," Merkel told a party conference of the Christian Democrats.

Eurogroup head Jean-Claude Juncker said there would be serious consequences if SYRIZA secured victory.

"If the radical left wins - which cannot be ruled out - the consequences for the currency union are unforeseeable," Juncker, head of the group of euro zone finance ministers, told Austrian paper Kurier.

"We will have to speak to any government. I can only warn everyone against leaving the currency union. The internal cohesion of the euro zone would be in danger.

Tsipras says Greece's lenders are bluffing when they threaten to turn off the funds if Athens reneges on the terms of the bailout - tax hikes, job losses and pay cuts that have helped condemn the country to five years of record-breaking recession.

FEARS FOR SPAIN, ITALY

Tsipras says the euro zone will not allow a Greek exit, fearing the pressure it would heap on the far larger economies of Spain, which has already secured a 100-billion-euro rescue for its banks, and Italy, which could be next to seek a bailout.

Italian Prime Minister Mario Monti said he and other European leaders expected a "favorable" outcome.

"I expect, and I have the impression that many European governments expect a vote that is favorable to maintaining a solid relationship between Greece and the rest of Europe, favorable to Greece staying in the euro zone, favorable to the parties that want to stay in," Monti said in Bologna.

Sunday's vote is a re-run of a May 6 election that produced stalemate, when anger at the close-knit and often corrupt political clique that has run Greece for years propelled SYRIZA from the political fringe into second place.

Opinion polls published until a ban two weeks ago put the two parties almost neck and neck. Neither is expected to win outright, leading to coalition talks with smaller parties.

"My heart says I should vote for the left, for all the horrible things these (mainstream) politicians have done to us, but my mind says vote for the right, so that Greece does not leave the euro," said part-time teacher Kostas Manitsas, 28.

The result will dominate a meeting of the Group of 20 world economic powers in Mexico on Monday and Tuesday.

Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy made a plea for greater political and fiscal union in Europe and urged Greeks to stick to the course.

"Europe has to transmit to the world that the euro is an irreversible project," Rajoy told a political rally on Saturday in San Sebastian.

Greeks say they want to keep the euro, but they do not want the pension, wage and jobs cuts imposed by the bailout package and which have seen living standards plummet and unemployment reach almost 23 percent.

"Tomorrow's vote must not be based on anger but on hope," the liberal left daily Ta Nea implored in an editorial. "It must be based on the Greece of the euro, not the Greece of the drachma."

But some global businesses and banks are already in retreat: Europe's biggest retailer, Carrefour, said on Friday it was selling up in Greece, a day after French bank Credit Agricole moved to take direct control of its Albanian, Bulgarian and Romanian units from its Greek bank Emporiki.

On Saturday, Germany's Biotest appeared to become the first drugmaker to say it was exiting the Greek market in July after its customers there failed to pay outstanding bills of 7 million euros. Others have threatened to do likewise, as the Greek health sector struggles with huge spending cuts.

Jobs threat in Unilever proposals

Proposals would see the closure of factories in Swansea and Slough and a distribution site in Bridgend, while an office Ewloe, North Wales would also close and work be transferred.

The changes could lead to 500 direct job losses and around 300 contractor and third party posts, while some jobs will also be outsourced to Unilever's IT centre in Bangalore, India. Reviews of the proposals are expected to be concluded in the autumn, with a final decision taken in September.

Jennie Formby, national officer of Unite, said: "Unilever's announcement is a long and complex one and we will be assessing the long-term impact for our members over the next few days. This is a devastating blow to the workforces involved and the local economies."

Unilever said it planned to invest ?40 million in its "historic home" of Port Sunlight, Wirral on Merseyside, with the creation of 150 new jobs. Work would transfer from Ewloe to Port Sunlight, where the workforce would increase from the current 1,500 to 2,000.

Amanda Sourry, chairman of Unilever UK and Ireland, said economic conditions in Europe were "very tough". She added: "While Unilever is growing well in the UK and globally, it will always be necessary to make changes which raise our game and ensure our continued success.

"We believe these proposals would substantially strengthen our platform for long-term growth and competitiveness. The proposals announced today will be reviewed thoroughly and the outcome shared with our employees as early as possible."

The company said its plans would "transform" Port Sunlight into a "significant centre of excellence" for the manufacture of shampoo and shower gel products, with growth potential for the next decade.

Around 225 jobs will be lost through the closure of the Swansea factory, which makes personal care products, around 250 at Slough, Berks which makes products including Radox, and 25 at the distribution site in Bridgend.

Unilever has a workforce of around 7,200 and makes products ranging from Ben and Jerry's ice cream, Marmite, PG Tips and Pot Noodles to Dove soap, Vaseline, Persil and Domestos.
