LITTLETON, New Hampshire ? A New Hampshire man who took several members of Hillary Clinton's presidential campaign staff hostage in 2007 was taken into custody on Monday on suspicion of leaving a halfway house overnight without permission.

Leeland Eisenberg, 52, faces a charge of escape punishable by up to seven years in prison after he was re-arrested in the lobby of a community center in Manchester, New Hampshire, the state's Department of Corrections said in a statement.

He had walked away from the minimum security Calumet Transitional Housing Unit in Manchester on Sunday, the statement said. Eisenberg had been eligible for parole in August, a department spokesman said.

In 2007, Eisenberg entered a Clinton campaign office in Rochester, New Hampshire, with what appeared to be a bomb hidden under his clothes and took five people hostage, holding them for nearly six hours before surrendering. It was later discovered he had strapped road flares to his body.

In an interview with CNN in 2007, Eisenberg said he took the hostages to raise awareness about mental health issues, the network reported on its website.

The New Hampshire Department of Corrections Investigations Bureau and the New Hampshire State Police were investigating the cause and circumstances that led to the inmate's disappearance.

How to get rid of acne? | Mexico Health Insurance

Any person who has ever experienced acne breakouts will tell you that it?s a very unpleasant experience. And not just because the inflammation in the skin can be very irritating and discomforting. We all are used to the fact that looks are an essential part of a person?s success and this is especially important for teens and young adults who are more emotionally vulnerable than older persons. So when a young person experiences acne breakouts this can seriously affect their social activity and acceptance in groups. You don?t see people with acne problems being too active and playing leading roles in different events. That?s because most of them feel discomfort because of their looks and tend to devote less time to communication and social activity. And this may have serious consequences later on.

So, the logic question is whether there can be something done about acne and what are the means of dealing with the problem effectively? Fortunately for people with acne there are different solutions to the problem that can be used in different situations effectively. So let?s take a short overview of the most commonly used anti-acne solutions.

You have definitely seen numerous anti-acne solution ads in magazines, on TV, the web or in drugstores. Topical cremes, gels and balms that are claimed to be very effective against acne. Fact is that most of these cosmetic solutions can really be effective against certain types of acne to a different extent. A large part of these gels and cremes are sold over the counter and don?t require a doctor to tell you how to use them. However, in more severe cases these solutions can be rather ineffective or even cause additional irritation.

In more serious cases of acne breakouts when typical balms and gels can?t help much it?s recommended that you address a dermatologist. There will be certain analysis taken in order to determine the actual cause of the problem and there may be different solutions prescribed. First of all, antibiotics may be applied both topically and internally in order to eliminate the bacterial infection that?s causing inflammation and consequent acne breakouts. Your doctor may also suggest specific dietary measures (eating less fat, sweets and spicy foods) or even refer you to a gastrologist for further investigation because severe skin conditions are often linked to gastrointestinal conditions.

And if none of these measures don?t help there?s one last solution that is used only in the most severe cases. This drug is called Accutane and it?s really effective for treating severe acne. Acne regulates the activity of oil glands in the skin and eliminates one of the key elements for acne development. However, Accutane is a very potent drug and should only be used under professional supervision. That is why it is only used in cases when all other solutions have already been tried and proved to be ineffective.

So don?t get down if acne is affecting your skin. There?s always a solution you can try to make your problem go away. You only have to take the time and try some of them to see which one works best for you. Or, better, address a doctor to find the right solution together.

Thousands rally to push goals of Egypt's uprising

CAIRO (AP) ? Thousands of Egyptians demonstrated across the country to denounce the president and purse the goals of the 2011 popular uprising.

Saturday's protests marked the fifth anniversary of the formation of the April 6th Youth Movement started in 2008 under former President Hosni Mubarak. Workers in Mahalla tore down a poster of Mubarak in what was a daring move at the time.

The group also played a crucial role in the uprising that toppled Mubarak.

The movement initially backed President Mohammed Morsi in election run-offs last June, but has since turned against him.

The opposition accuses him of acting like his autocratic predecessor and of not having an inclusive political process. Morsi's Muslim Brotherhood party says Morsi should be challenged at the ballot box, not in street protests.

Majority of Americans now support legalizing marijuana

For years, supporters of marijuana legalization have pointed to polls trending their way, claiming the issue was about to tip as favorable to a majority of Americans.

Now, their prediction has finally come true.

For the first time, a major U.S. poll shows a majority of nationwide support for legalizing marijuana: 52 percent now back legalized pot, compared with 45 percent who oppose it, according to a new survey from the Pew Research Center. Pew has been asking about marijuana since 1969, when only 12 percent thought it should be legal, and 84 percent said it shouldn't be.

In the last few years, national polls have shown marijuana flirting with overall popularity.

In 2011, 50 percent told Gallup that marijuana should be legal-a record in that firm's polling. (That support sank to 48 percent last year.) ABC and The Washington Post found 48 percent support in November, and CBS found 4 7 percent in favor of legalization in the same month. Gallup reported in December that 64 percent said the federal government should step aside when states clear the way for pot.

The new Pew survey comes on the heels of two big victories for marijuana supporters in 2012, when Washington and Colorado became the first two states to legalize marijuana for recreational use.

Support has grown rapidly in the last three years. Since March 2010, when most opposed marijuana legalization and 41 percent backed it, support has grown by 11 percentage points in Pew's data. Since 2002, it's grown by 20 percent.

The legalization charge is being led by young people: Support ranked highest among 18-29-year-old respondents, 64 percent of whom think pot should be legal. Politically, liberal Democrats overwhelmingly think marijuana should be legal, at 73 percent.

But the idea of legalization has grown by making inroads among Republicans. Since 2010, the demographic that has shifted more support than any other-including groups broken down by age, political leaning, race, gender, and education-is liberal and moderate Republicans. Among them, support has jumped 17 percentage points in the last three years, from 36 percent in 2010 to 53 percent today.

Disney shuts down game development at LucasArts, moves to licensed Star Wars games

If you're old enough to have played PC games for more than a decade, LucasArts (originally LucasFilm Games) likely has a permanent place in your heart after a string of legendary adventure and flight combat releases. You'll unfortunately have to put the company as you knew it squarely in the past -- Lucasfilm's new owner, Disney, is ending internal development at LucasArts. The software house is shifting to a licensing model for Star Wars games, reportedly "minimizing the company's risk" while expanding the range of games on offer. There's a chance that in-progress titles like Star Wars 1313 will survive with outside help, according to a spokesperson in touch with GameInformer, but talk of layoffs from Kotaku dampens any chances for direct follow-ups to favorites like Grim Fandango. We won't mourn too much when personas like Ron Gilbert, Lawrence Holland and Tim Schafer have long since moved on to other companies -- still, it's unquestionably the end of an era for game and movie fans alike.

Washington state to clamp down on marijuana smoking in bars

SEATTLE (Reuters) - Washington state will clamp down on bars that have been skirting a ban on public pot use by converting their watering holes into private clubs, as the state navigates how it will regulate marijuana after voters legalized the drug for recreational use last year.

Washington and Colorado became the first U.S. states to legalize marijuana for recreational use in twin popular votes in November. The Washington law will ultimately permit cannabis to be sold and taxed at state-licensed stores.

The state's Liquor Control Board, charged with overseeing the move to legal adult recreational pot use, said on Wednesday that it will crack down on bars that convert into private clubs where individuals can consume marijuana.

"These licensed locations are allowing patrons to either smoke, vaporize or otherwise ingest marijuana on the premises," the board said in a statement.

Brian Smith, a board spokesman, said the law prevents public display of pot use, including in restaurants and bars, a civil infraction that equates to a $103 fine.

"You can't open it up, you can't show somebody, and you certainly can't smoke it or ingest it in some way in a public place," Smith said. "Bars and restaurants are public places that we license."

Smith said there were at least two bars in the Pacific Northwest state where patrons were toking up.

The Washington state liquor control board "will take steps to prevent that kind of activity from proliferating," he said.

The Liquor Control Board has until December to set up a system to oversee adult recreational pot use, which would regulate pot in a way similar to how alcohol is regulated.

Marijuana use remains illegal under federal law.

A law decriminalizing possession of small amounts of marijuana went into effect in Rhode Island on Monday after the state last year became the 15th in the United States to enact such legislation.

Pope extends hand of friendship to "Muslim brothers and sisters" during Good Friday rite

ROME - Pope Francis reached out in friendship to "so many Muslim brothers and sisters" during a Good Friday procession dedicated to the suffering of Christians from terrorism, war and religious fanaticism in the Middle East.

The new pontiff, who has rankled traditionalists by rejecting many trappings of his office, mostly stuck to the traditional script during the nighttime Way of the Cross procession at Rome's Colosseum, one of the most dramatic rituals of Holy Week.

With torches lighting the way, the faithful carried a cross to different stations, where meditations and prayers were read out recalling the final hours of Jesus' life and his crucifixion.

This year, the prayers were composed by young Lebanese, and many recalled the plight of minority Christians in the region, where wars have forced thousands to flee their homelands. The meditations called for an end to "violent fundamentalism," terrorism and the "wars and violence which in our days devastate various countries in the Middle East."

Francis, who became pope just over two weeks ago, chose, however, to stress Christians' positive relations with Muslims in the region in his brief comments at the end of the ceremony.

Standing on a platform overlooking the procession route, Francis recalled Benedict XVI's 2012 visit to Lebanon when "we saw the beauty and the strong bond of communion joining Christians together in that land and the friendship of our Muslim brothers and sisters and so many others."

"That occasion was a sign to the Middle East and to the whole world, a sign of hope," he said.

Friday's outreach followed Francis' eyebrow-raising gesture a day earlier, when he washed and kissed the feet of two women, one a Muslim, in the Holy Thursday ritual that commemorates Jesus' washing of his apostles' feet during the Last Supper before his crucifixion.

Breaking with tradition, Francis performed the ritual on 12 inmates at a juvenile detention centre, rather than in Rome's grand St. John Lateran basilica, where in the past, 12 priests have been chosen to represent Jesus' disciples.

Before he became pope, the former Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio long cultivated warm relations with Muslim leaders in his native Argentina. In one of his first speeches as pope, he called for the church and the West in general to "intensify" relations with the Muslim world.

The Vatican's relations with Islam hit several bumps during Benedict XVI's papacy, when he outraged Muslims with a 2006 speech quoting a Byzantine emperor as saying some of Prophet Muhammad's teachings were "evil and inhuman." And in 2011, the pre-eminent institute of Islamic learning in the Sunni Muslim world, Cairo's Al-Azhar institute, froze dialogue with the Vatican to protest Benedict's call for greater protection of Christians in Egypt.

However, Francis' past outreach to the Muslim community in Argentina seems to have changed that. Al-Azhar's chief imam, Sheik Ahmed el-Tayyib, sent a message of congratulations to Francis on his election and said he hoped for co-operation.

The Vatican's efforts to reconcile with the Islamic world have not been welcomed by all. Italy's most famous Muslim convert to Catholicism, Magdi Allam, announced last week he was leaving the church because of its "soft" stance on Islam. Allam was baptized by Benedict XVI in 2008 during the high-profile Easter Vigil service when the pope traditionally baptizes a handful of adults. There has been no Vatican comment on his about-face.

Thousands of people packed the Colosseum and surrounding areas for the nighttime procession, holding candles wrapped in paper globes as Francis sat in silent prayer as a giant torch-lit crucifix twinkled nearby. Some in the crowd had Lebanese flags around their shoulders in an indication of the special role Lebanese faithful played in this year's procession.

Lebanon has the largest percentage of Christians in the Middle East ? nearly 40 per cent of the country's 4 million people, with Maronite Catholics the largest sect. As civil war has raged in neighbouring Syria, Lebanon's Christian community has been divided between supporters and opponents of Syrian President Bashar Assad.

Overall, Christians in the Middle East have been uneasy as the Arab Spring has led to the strengthening of Islamist groups in most countries that have experienced uprisings. Thousands of Christians have fled the region ? a phenomenon that the Vatican has lamented, given Christianity's roots in the Holy Land.

"How sad it is to see this blessed land suffer in its children, who relentlessly tear one another to pieces and die!" said one of the Good Friday meditations. "It seems that nothing can overcome evil, terrorism, murder and hatred."

Francis picked up on that message, saying Christ's death on the cross is "the answer which Christians offer in the face of evil, the evil that continues to work in us and around us."

"Christians must respond to evil with good, taking the cross upon themselves as Jesus did," he said.

At the end of the ceremony, a male choir sang a haunting Arabic hymn, a reflection of the Eastern rite influence that infused the ceremony.

On Saturday, Francis presides over the solemn Easter Vigil ceremony in St. Peter's Basilica and on Sunday, he celebrates Easter Mass and delivers an important speech. Usually the pope also issues Easter greetings in dozens of languages.

In his two weeks as pope, Francis' discomfort with speaking in any language other than Italian has become apparent. The Vatican spokesman, the Rev. Federico Lombardi, said Friday "we'll have to see" what Francis does with the multilingual greetings.

The Good Friday procession was conducted entirely in Italian, whereas in years past the core elements recounting what happens at each station would be recited in a variety of languages.

BlackBerry Z10 (T-Mobile)

T-Mobile's version of the BlackBerry Z10 is very similar to the AT&T version. Read our full review of the AT&T BlackBerry Z10 and BlackBerry 10 OS for an in-depth look. There are a few unique considerations for those considering a BlackBerry on T-Mobile, though. Most notably, the Z10 is the first T-Mobile LTE phone that's comfortable to use in one hand. At press time, the only two handsets confirmed for T-Mobile's new LTE network are the Z10 and the Samsung Galaxy Note II, which is more of a tablet than a phone.

Here's the thing, though: That doesn't matter. Because T-Mobile's HSPA+ network is so fast, and its LTE network is so unformed, you shouldn't be making T-Mobile buying decisions based on LTE yet. Using speedtest.net on the BlackBerry Z10, I got 10-13Mbps down and around .8Mbps up. That matches the download speeds I expect to see initially on T-Mobile's 5x5 LTE network. Upload speeds will be much faster on LTE, but the HSPA+ and LTE experiences will be more similar than on any other carrier.

Since T-Mobile has so little LTE, I'm very happy to see that there's an LTE toggle under network settings. Even better, you can mix and match whichever networks you want. Want 2G only? Sure. LTE and HSPA+ but not EDGE? I have no idea why you'd do that, but go for it.

loading...

Unfortunately, the Z10 is missing two of T-Mobile's most compelling network features: Wi-Fi calling and HD Voice. The lack of Wi-Fi calling may hurt for older T-Mobile BlackBerry owners, who've become used to the feature protecting their phone calls in rooms with no T-Mobile signal. The lack of HD Voice is just a missed opportunity. Like the AT&T Z10, the T-Mobile version is a very good voice phone. But HD Voice adds a richness to calls that could have helped set this device apart.

As expected, the T-Mobile Z10 benchmarked exactly the same as the AT&T model. I tested battery life on the HSPA+ network and got 7 hours, 33 minutes of talk time, pretty much exactly the same as I saw on the AT&T Z10. The 1800mAh battery just isn't quite enough for a day of heavy use.

T-Mobile will offer the lowest monthly cost in the U.S. for a BlackBerry Z10, but not always by much. For a Z10 with unlimited talk, text, and 2.5GB data, the carrier will charge $60 per month with no contract. Unlimited data will cost $70 a month. Verizon charges $60 per month for unlimited talk, text, and 2GB data, with each additional 2GB adding $10 a month. This all compares favorably to AT&T's monthly plans, where 450 talk minutes, unlimited text, and 3GB of data costs $89.99.

Everything I said about the AT&T Z10 still applies here, possibly even more so because the Z10 lacks the T-Mobile differentiators of Wi-Fi calling and HD Voice. While the Z10 is a good phone with many positive aspects, the Android, Apple, and Microsoft ecosystems are all more compelling overall. BlackBerry has a better chance with the Q10, with a hardware keyboard that's relatively rare in the industry and which really plays up BlackBerry's superior messaging prowess.

Several phones I want to recommend on T-Mobile aren't quite here yet: the BlackBerry Q10, the Samsung Galaxy S4, and the HTC One are all coming in the next few months. For now, the LG Nexus 4 is the best bet on the carrier, and at an unbelievable $49.99 right now, it's an absolute steal. While it doesn't have LTE, the Nexus 4 has excellent HSPA+ performance and the latest version of Android, which is at the moment, a much more well-developed ecosystem than BlackBerry 10.

Toddler Mauled by 7 Dogs Dies in Georgia | WebProNews

Family pets are,on the internet at least, normally shown as protective of their family, especially babies and children. One family in Georgia, however, learned that some pets don?t make friends with toddlers.

Local Savannah, Georgia news station WTOC is reporting that a 21-month-old girl was killed when seven dogs attacked her outside her home in Ellabell, Georgia. The seven dogs were all pit bulls or pit bull-mixed, and have now been put down.

The girl, Monica Laminack, reportedly crawled outside through a doggie door while her 12-year-old brother was supposed to be watching her. In total, there were a reported five people in the house at the time of the mauling. The family owned a total of nine dogs. A beagle and Irish setter were not involved in the attack, and were not put down.

Bryan County Sheriff Clyde Smith told WTOC that the girl was found with multiple bites on her body and had apparently been dragged throughout the yard sometime during the hour-and-a-half after she crawled outside. Smith related that the girl?s body was cold when first responders arrived, indicating that she had been dead for some time. The sheriff indicated that he expects charges related to the death to be filed.

Google Android 4.2.2 'Jelly Bean'

Android 4.2.2 "Jelly Bean" is Google's latest refinement of what is now the world's most popular OS on new smartphones. For now, you can only get Android 4.2.2 on a few devices, including the?Google Nexus 4 phone, and the Google Nexus 7 and Nexus 10 tablets. It's also rolling out to existing Galaxy Nexus owners, and the newly announced Samsung Galaxy S4 will have it at launch. There's nothing revolutionary about Android 4.2.2, but there are enough significant updates to cement Jelly Bean's Editors' Choice status for mobile smartphone operating systems.

User Interface Improvements
For this review, I tested Android 4.2.2 on a Google Nexus 4. As was the case with Android 4.1, the setup process is smooth, and faster than it is with earlier Android phones. Most of the default options were already checked, for example, and I had no problem adding my existing Google account. Once you're in, the OS walks you along with a series of translucent tip screens that appear over the home screen and main menu. This hand-holding is definitely helpful if you're new to the OS, though experienced users will already know many of the tips.

As we found when first testing Android 4.1, there's more going on here than just minor UI refinements. At Google I/O last year, Google engineering director David Burke talked about Project Butter, which was the company's effort to improve Android performance enough that it feels "buttery" smooth in use. This effort affected many aspects of the OS, such as improved vsync timing for faster frame rates on the display itself, triple graphics buffering for preventing dropped frames in video games, and improved overall touch-screen response.

In practice, there's definitely a noticeable improvement over, say, Android 4.0 "Ice Cream Sandwich." You can easily resize and move around icons and widgets on each home screen panel or delete apps by swiping the icon up, which causes it to disappear. The system font ("Roboto") already looked sharp and smooth before, and still does. But menu animations, finger swipes, and scrolling feel at least as solid as they do on iOS, if not better.

Keyboard, Web Browser, and Messaging
The predictive keyboard works well. I spent quite some time typing on it, and it seemed to do a much better job than before at guessing the word I meant, even whenever I typed several letters incorrectly. The prediction function works just as it does on Apple iOS 6.1, in that it can figure out what word you want to type even if your fingers are not hitting the on-screen keys directly, just by the grammar of your sentence and the built-in dictionary.

For the Swype-inclined, the new?Gesture Typing feature attempts to mimic Swype, in that you can now draw out words by gliding your fingertip over each letter on the on-screen keyboard. Google also boosted the predictive text engine to allow for spaces between words, as well as boosting the dictionary the engine uses overall, both for voice dictation and typing.

In fact, Android 4.2.2's predictive text engine also tops that of iOS, in that it still shows the bar beneath the text window with possible alternatives?rather than just one the way the iPhone does?and then pops it in with a little animated fade as you continue typing. These are small details, but they're beautiful in action. This is exactly the kind of polish Android needed all along, though the new BlackBerry Z10 on-screen keyboard has turned out to be even better.

The Web browser offers smooth handling of multiple tabs, which you can swipe among on a separate screen. One issue; while auto-rotate is switched off by default, when I turned it on, I noticed some pages had trouble formatting columns of text when flipping between landscape and portrait mode. In other words, the screen would be formatted correctly in one orientation, but then end up with a thin column and lots of white space in the other.

Adobe has officially dropped support for Flash starting with Jelly Bean 4.1. This doesn't bother me as much as it irks others. Even when it works on mobile devices, it doesn't really work all that well. The end of Flash for Android is hardly a surprise, at any rate, as Adobe said months ago it was discontinuing all mobile Flash development.

In the messaging app, tap the new message icon, and it pops up names and photos from your contact list as you type letters, including alternate phone numbers indented slightly as compared with the main one. I tested this function with a book of about 1,500 contacts and it was super fast.

Sonos Playbar review: an excellent (and expensive) home theater addition

Sonos Playbar review an excellent and expensive home theater addition

Sonos has found a sweet spot in the audio world. Its wireless technology and ability to stream music from almost any source -- be it from the cloud or local storage -- have given it considerable geek cred, yet its simple setup still offers mass appeal. Of course, none of that would matter if its systems didn't sound good, but fortunately, Sonos' Play:3, Play:5 and its Sub have all impressed with the quality of audio they produce. The $699 Playbar is the newest member of the family, and with this product, Sonos is setting its sights squarely on the home theater market. Is it fit for your living room? Read on to find out.

Can Bacteria Be Causing Colon Cancer? : Easy Health Options?

can-bacteria-be-causing-colon-cancer_300More than 100,000 people are diagnosed with colon cancer in the United States every year. So, while March is National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month, anytime is an important time to focus on improving your colon health.

We rarely think about the large intestine unless it causes discomfort. However, that doesn?t mean we should ignore it. We have many tools to support colon health and prevent colorectal cancer, and research shows we should take advantage of every one.

Risk Factors

There are a variety of well-known risk factors for colon cancer: family history, lifestyle and pre-existing conditions, such as Crohn?s disease.

Diet and exercise are the best ways to control your risk for colon cancer, as they are with many conditions. Your meals should be focused on lean protein, whole grains, fruits and vegetables. Stay away from high glycemic index foods such as sugars and simple carbohydrates. A study of patients who had undergone colon cancer surgery found that those who controlled their glycemic index had longer disease-free survival rates. They send glucose into the bloodstream quickly and cause blood sugar to spike.

You should also increase your fiber intake. Dietary fiber can slow down changes in blood sugar.

As for exercise, it doesn?t take much to be effective. Just a 30-minute brisk walk each day can do wonders for your colon, as well as for your cardiovascular and overall health.

What Lives In The Microbiome

The digestive tract is home to billions of symbiotic bacteria that generally help with digestion and other functions. So now this area of the body is known as a ?microbiome? ? a habitat for tiny flora.

For many years, this was an understudied aspect of human health, but not anymore. Beneficial bacteria have been found to be involved in numerous areas of health beyond digestion. Researchers continue to find links between the overgrowth of harmful bacteria and long-term, chronic health problems.

For example, one 2012 study sheds light on how E. coli bacteria may play a role in cancer. Researchers at the University of Liverpool, in collaboration with the University of North Carolina, looked at an E. coli strain that carries PKS genes, genetic material that produces a DNA-destroying toxin. The scientists found much higher levels of this variety of E. coli in people with inflammatory bowel disease and in those with colon cancer. Further research found that laboratory animals harboring PKS-positive E. coli have a higher incidence of colon cancer.

Scientists believe that it is the DNA damage caused by these bacteria that produces cellular changes that cause cancer.

The idea that a form of bacteria might influence cancer development should come as no surprise. Healthy bacteria have been found to protect against cancer, heart disease and even mood disorders. Conversely, unhealthy varieties can promote disease, acutely or chronically.

This is why it is so important to support a healthy balance of beneficial bacteria in our bodies. While the microscopic inhabitants of our microbiome watch out for our health, this cancer can?t be one-sided. You, as their host, must also look after them. A proper diet, along with targeted supplementation, is the best support.

The same researchers who discovered the potential relationship between PKS-positive E. coli and colon cancer had previously studied how different foods affect E. coli movement in the gut. For example, plantains and broccoli reduce the amount of bad bacteria being taken in by cells, while the fat emulsifiers found in processed foods increase the amount of E. coli being taken in.

Probiotics And Cleansing

One of the best ways to support the microbiome is through probiotic-rich supplements as well as cultured foods like yogurt and sauerkraut. By reintroducing healthy bacteria into the digestive tract, we boost immunity, improve nutrient absorption and generate a number of other significant health benefits.

We should also be taking active steps to regularly remove toxins. Springtime is an opportune season to engage in gentle, restorative cleanses to remove toxins from the digestive tract and body. One of my top recommendations for this is modified citrus pectin (MCP). It helps remove heavy metals and environmental toxins from the circulation and digestive system. MCP is also a powerful supplement for maintaining healthy inflammation responses as well as supporting immunity and cellular health.

In addition, an ancient Tibetan herbal formula has been shown in research to inhibit certain strains of pathogenic bacteria, including two forms of E. coli. This formula has also been extensively researched for its ability to support circulation and a healthy inflammation process.

While these are good tips for maintaining colon health, nothing is foolproof. That?s why I recommend getting screened for colon cancer. For those 50 or older, a colonoscopy can detect early colon cancer. Consult with your physician; if you have a family history of colorectal cancer, you may want to be screened at an even younger age. Prevention efforts and effective early detection methods directed at cancer can potentially save lives.

FTC report: movie rating enforcement shows improvement

By Ira Teinowitz

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) - Movie theaters are doing a far better job of enforcing box office ratings, the Federal Trade Commission said Monday.

Reporting results of its biennial review of industry's enforcement of its voluntary ratings systems for theaters as well as DVDs and videogames, the FTC generally gave the entertainment industry good marks.

The FTC said its secret shoppers - unaccompanied 13 to 16-year-olds - went to 250 theaters, and ran into much more difficulty buying tickets to R-rated movies.

"Ratings enforcement at the movie box office is at its highest level since the FTC began its mystery shopper program in 2000," said the report. "Less than one-quarter of underage shoppers were able to buy a ticket to an R-rated movie, down from one-third in 2010."

The FTC said enforcement was especially high at four of the seven major theater chains.

AMC Entertainment turned away 95 percent of the teens trying to buy tickets to R-rated movies, and Regal Entertainment and Marcus Theaters also demonstrated high levels of enforcement.

Rick Quaresima, the FTC's assistant director of advertising practices, told TheWrap the latest study buttressed a trend the FTC has seen toward greater enforcement of the voluntary ratings.

The FTC began doing the reports at the request of Congress, amidst complaints that the voluntary system used for the entertainment industry's ratings weren't being enforced by theaters and stores.

Besides going to movie box offices, the FTC sent the "secret shoppers" out to stores to try to buy R-rated and unrated DVDs, music CDs with "Parental Advisory" labels, and videogames with M-rated labels. Shoppers attempted to make a buy in each category 250 times.

The latest report said 30 percent of shoppers were able to purchase R-rated movie DVDs compared to 38 percent in 2010, and 30 percent were able to buy unrated DVDs, down from 47 percent in 2010. The FTC said Blockbuster, Best Buy, Walmart, and Kmart denied more than three quarters of purchase attempts.

On music CDs, the FTC said retailers are increasingly turning away children attempting to purchase music CDs bearing the Parental Advisory Label. Less than half of underage shoppers (47 percent) were able to purchase CDs with this label, down from 64 percent in 2010 and 72 percent in 2009.

In videogames, where compliance was already highest, the FTC reported little change.

It said 13 percent of underage teenage shoppers were able to buy M-rated video games, unchanged from the last report. National Association of Theater Owners President John Fithian said Monday in a statement that his group is "proud of the significant improvement in ratings enforcement" in the nation's theaters.

"This report and its results continue to reinforce the importance and effectiveness of the voluntary ratings system," Fithian said. "As the Supreme Court noted in its decision in Brown v. EMA, retailers' voluntary enforcement of the ratings provide an effective alternative to state regulation. We will continue to do our part in enforcing the voluntary ratings system that allows creators to create and parents to make informed decisions about their children's entertainment."

High-Dose Statins Linked to Acute Kidney Damage ? WebMD

Large study doesn't prove connection, but experts say patients should ask doctors about concerns

WebMD News from HealthDay

By Denise Mann

HealthDay Reporter

TUESDAY, March 19 (HealthDay News) -- People who take high doses of popular cholesterol-lowering drugs called statins may be more likely to develop kidney problems, a new study suggests.

Specifically, those participants who took higher doses of statins were 34 percent more likely to be hospitalized for acute kidney injury during the first 120 days of treatment, compared to their counterparts who were taking lower doses. This risk remained elevated two years after starting treatment. The findings appeared online March 19 in the journal BMJ.

Statins are widely prescribed to lower blood cholesterol levels, and can be very effective. They do, however, confer their share of risks, most notably liver damage and muscle pain or weakness. Doctors currently recommend that people take a liver enzyme test before or shortly after they begin taking statins. The issue of kidney damage as seen in the current study, however, is relatively new.

Canadian researchers analyzed the health records from more than 2 million people aged 40 or older with or without kidney disease who were also taking statins. High-dose statins included rosuvastatin (Crestor) at doses of 10 milligrams (mg) or higher, atorvastatin (Lipitor) at doses of 20 mg or higher and simvastatin (Zocor) at doses of 40 mg. All other statin doses were considered low dose.

People with kidney disease were not at higher risk for acute kidney problems independent of their statin use, the study found.

To illustrate the effect of statin dosage, about 1,700 people without kidney disease would need to be treated with a high-dose statin rather than a low-dose version to cause one additional hospitalization for kidney injury, the researchers said.

"The lowest dose of statin required to achieve therapeutic goals should be prescribed," said study author Colin Dormuth, an epidemiologist at the University of British Columbia, in Vancouver.

Exactly how -- or even if -- statins cause kidney injury is not known. "The elevated risk in patients using high-potency statins could be related to an increased risk of [muscle damage]," Dormuth said. In addition, statins have been shown to block the production of coenzyme Q10 (a substance in the body that helps break down food), which could theoretically lead to kidney injury, he said.

Dormuth said that other studies have shown a link between statin treatment and protein in the urine, which is a hallmark of kidney disease.

"If you are concerned about your statin then go talk to your doctor," he said. "Do not panic. There are both urine and blood tests your doctor can use to monitor your kidneys."

Most experts agree that concerned individuals should discuss their risks with their doctor before jumping to any conclusions.

"We always think about liver disease and what we are seeing from this trial is that we have to keep a look out for acute kidney failure too," said Dr. Suzanne Steinbaum, a preventive cardiologist at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City. "We should check kidney function with a blood test."

CSN: Eagles say they're not shopping Maclin

PHOENIX -- Forget what you?ve seen on Twitter or read in cyberspace: the Eagles aren?t actively shopping wide receiver Jeremy Maclin.

They intend to hang onto the fifth-year pro, according to a team source, even though Maclin is entering the final year of his rookie contract.

Maclin, a 2009 first-round pick who went 19th overall, still hasn?t surpassed 1,000 yards receiving and only once has played 16 games, but the only way the Eagles would deal him is if another team made them an irresistible offer, the source added.

Maclin?s name has surfaced in trade speculation ever since Colts owner Jim Irsay wrote on his Twitter account Sunday from the NFL owners meetings that the Colts, who have been extremely busy in free agency, were working on acquiring another player.

Irsay then issued this tweet: ?Colt Fans, hint ? it's a Wide Receiver!?

Naturally, some of the league?s biggest names at receiver were suddenly linked to the Colts, including Victor Cruz (a restricted free agent), Larry Fitzgerald and Maclin.

The Eagles and Colts have executed some minor deals since Irsay last January hired Ryan Grigson, former Eagles director of player personnel, to be the Colts? new general manager.

Last year, the Eagles traded right tackle Winston Justice and linebackers Moise Fokou and Greg Lloyd Jr. to Indianapolis in separate deals to acquire spare cornerback Kevin Thomas and some picks. The Colts also signed former Eagles centers A.Q. Shipley and Mike McGlynn to start rebuilding their offensive line behind No. 1 pick Andrew Luck.

But there are no indications that the Eagles and Colts have talked about Maclin, although the Colts could surely use a young, dynamic wide receiver to complement the maturing Luck.

Likewise, there aren?t any indications that the Eagles have soured on Maclin or that Maclin is disappointed that he hasn?t yet received an extension. After the season finale against the Giants, a 42-7 loss at MetLife Stadium, Maclin said he wasn?t worried about his contract status and wouldn?t cause problems if he entered 2013 without a new deal.

?No. I understand,? he said. ?It?s football. It?s a business. Just like I understand there are risks. I?ve seen them guys [who hold out] hurt themselves by doing that.?

Maclin also said his value could soar next offseason on the open market if he reached his full potential in 2013.

?That?s why I know, when the time is right [to talk contract], the time is right,? he added.

Maclin?s 258 career receptions are most in franchise history through a player?s first four seasons and his 3,453 receiving yards are third-most after four years, but expectations for him were higher after the Eagles traded up two spots in the first round of the 2009 draft to grab the former Missouri standout.

After his breakout 2010, when he caught 70 passes for 964 yards and led the team with 10 touchdowns, his numbers started to gradually drop. He caught 63 passes for 859 yards and five touchdowns in 2011 and last year caught 69 passes for 857 yards and seven touchdowns.

Those seem like solid numbers for a No. 2 wideout, but even Maclin agreed that his?r?sum? isn?t complete.

?I?ve got to become a better player,? he said while cleaning out his locker one day after the season finale. ?Just in general.?

What is his ceiling?

?I have all the faith in the world that I can be an elite receiver in this league,? Maclin said. ?I feel like I possess the skill set to do so. This year everything certainly kind of didn?t work out, with everything we had going on with personnel. It was just hard to kind get into a jell and get into a rhythm.?

Pentax 645D

Depending on the type of photographer you are, the Pentax 645D ($8,799.95 direct, body only) could be a dream camera or it could be one that completely befuddles you. Event photographers can stop reading here, as the 40-megapixel camera isn't a high ISO monster, can't record video, and doesn't fire off shots in rapid succession. But if you're more of a slow shooter?whether it be studio portraits or landscapes?the weather-sealed 645D ?may be right up your alley. It represents a relatively inexpensive path into medium-format digital photography, as the similar Hasselblad H4D-40 will set you back $16,995, and the Leica S2 is priced even higher at $22,995. Sports and event shooters should turn their attention to our a fast-shooting camera like the Nikon D4, which can fire off rapid shots and capture images in even the most challenging light.

Design and Features
The 645D is big, and it's styled unlike a typical D-SLR. It has a very deep handgrip, but it's body seems squat thanks to a mirror box that extends out much further than a camera with a 35mm lens mount. The body measures 4.6 by 6.1 by 4.7 inches (HWD) and weighs in at a hefty 3 pounds, 4.2 ounces. Compare this with the Nikon D800, a 35mm full-frame D-SLR that measures 4.8 by 5.7 by 3.2 inches and weighs only 2 pounds. Because of its weight, Pentax opted to put two tripod mounts on the body?one for portrait and one for landscape orientation?as some tripod heads won't be able to handle the camera's mass when used in a sideways position.

If you aren't familiar with what differentiates medium-format, full-frame, and APS-C, it's all about sensor size. The Pentax 645D's CCD sensor is 33 by 44mm in size, which is quite a bit larger than the 24 by 36mm sensor found on a full-frame camera like the Canon EOS 5D Mark III, or the 18 by 24mm sensor found in a mainstream APS-C D-SLR like the Sony Alpha 77. Because you need to cover a large physical area with light, lenses have to be bigger, as does the mirror box.?

The 645D is actually based on a lens system that captured images on 60-by-45mm frames of film, and can accept older lenses that were used with Pentax 645 film bodies. If you have the appropriate adapter, you can also mount lenses designed for the Pentax 6x7 system, capturing huge 60 by 70mm negatives on 120 or 220 format film. Aside from pure resolution, which is now available in smaller format cameras like the Nikon D800 , there are plenty of reasons to choose medium format for your work. The larger sensor creates a different relationship between focal length and field of view. The 55mm lens that is often paired with this camera is a true normal?its focal length matches the diagonal measurement of the sensor. The equivalent focal length on a 35mm sensor camera is 43mm. This changes the distance between you and your subject, assuming that you want to maintain the same field of view, altering perspective. The larger sensor also creates a shallower depth of field than the equivalent lens on a smaller format camera, which is desirable for portraits.

If your biceps are up to it, the 645D actually handles quite well as a handheld camera, although I'd recommend using a tripod when you can. Its control layout is excellent, and there are physical control buttons, dials, and switches for almost every common function. The mode dial lets you choose standard shooting modes, there's a dedicated switch to toggle between Spot, Center Weighted, and Matrix metering, and another switch to set the focus point selection to either the center point, manual selection, or automatic operation. Because the camera's mirror is quite large, the vibration it causes when it raises to take a shot can actually cause some vibration that can hurt image quality. If your shutter speed for a shot is low and you're working on a tripod, you can utilize the Mirror Lockup feature?a toggle switch on the right side of the mirror box that causes the mirror to raise and stay raised when you first trip the shutter button. Hitting the shutter again takes the photo. If you really need to minimize vibrations, you can use this in conjunction with the Self Timer to get a rock solid shot.

Control buttons let you adjust the ISO, Exposure Compensation, Color Space, White Balance, Exposure Bracketing, and Drive Mode. There are also buttons to toggle between Raw and JPG shooting, and to select which of the two SD card slots is in use. Current shooting settings are displayed in the eye-level viewfinder, as well as on the large monochrome LCD that adorns the top of the camera?if you're shooting in a dim environment, there's a button you can press to illuminate that display as well.

There's no Live View mode on the 645D?the camera's CCD sensor technology prevents that functionality?but it didn't stop Pentax from putting an excellent 3-inch 921k-dot display on the rear of the camera, directly below the viewfinder eyecup. You can use this to configure the camera via its text-based menu system, or to review photos. The excellent resolution makes it possible to confirm focus, which is important when working with such a large image sensor, as it is less forgiving of slight focus errors.

Landscape photographers should take special note of the camera's weather sealing. Pentax designed the camera so that it could be used in inclement weather, as every port, button, and opening is sealed against the elements. When you couple this with a weather-sealed lens?there are two available at the moment?you have a camera that can shoot in a downpour, windstorm, or worse. With a little trepidation due to the replacement cost, I simulated a downpour in my kitchen sink and placed the 645D under the running water?it performed like a champ, as I was able to pick up and shoot the dripping wet camera immediately. Pentax has also released a trio of weather-sealed lenses to go along with the camera. These include the wide-angle SMC DA 645 25mm F4 AL (IF) SDM AW and the close-focusing HD D FA 645 Macro 90mm F2.8 ED AW SR. There is also a full frange of legacy lenses available in both manual focus and autofocus versions, but none of these are sealed against the elements.

Survey: Low-wage workers gloomy about future

WASHINGTON (AP) ? America's lower-income workers have posted the biggest job gains since the deep 2007-09 recession ? but few are bragging.

As a workforce sector, those earning $35,000 or less annually are generally pessimistic about their finances and career prospects. Many see themselves as worse off now than during the recession, a two-part Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research survey of workers and employers shows.

The survey revealed that many people at the lowest rung in the workplace view their jobs as a dead end. Half were "not too" or "not at all" confident that their jobs would help them achieve long-term career goals. And only 41 percent of workers at the same place for more than a decade reported ever receiving a promotion.

Yet 44 percent of employers surveyed said it's hard to recruit people with appropriate skills or experiences to do lower-wage jobs, particularly in manufacturing (54 percent). While 88 percent of employers said they were investing in training and education for employee advancement, awareness and use of such programs among the lower-wage workers was only modest.

Although President Barack Obama made it a national goal to "equip our citizens with the skills and training" to compete for good jobs, the survey shows a U.S. workforce that has grown increasingly polarized, with workers and their bosses seeing many things differently.

Seventy-two percent of employers at big companies and 58 percent at small ones say there is a "great deal" or "some" opportunity for worker advancement. But, asked the same question, 67 percent of all low-wage workers said they saw "a little" or "no opportunity" at their jobs for advancement.

Through last month, the economy had recovered only about 5.7 million of the 8.7 million jobs shed in the deepest downturn since the Great Depression. Low-wage jobs are usually the first to come back following a recession. While the outlook clearly is improving, economic growth remains anemic and unemployment is a still-high 7.7 percent.

Ronald Moore, 48, of Lebanon, Ind., is among those who have seen their situation improve. He started his own home-inspection company three years ago after he couldn't find enough work as a truck driver. But "nobody was buying homes, so no one needed an inspection," he said. "It was pretty rough in the beginning." Now he operates a custom cabinet business, where business is starting to improve. Slowly.

To gauge the experiences and perspectives of lower-wage workers, the AP-NORC Center conducted two separate surveys. A sample of 1,606 workers earning $35,000 or less annually was surveyed last summer, while a companion poll of 1,487 employers of such workers was conducted from November through January.

Roughly 65 percent of the jobs the U.S. economy added since the recession officially ended in June 2009 have been lower-wage ones.

Despite those numerical gains, "lower-income households have been hit very hard and have not benefited as much from the recovery," said Mark Zandi, chief economist at Moody's Analytics. "Their real wages are going nowhere. And this is a group that has more debt, fewer assets, is less likely to own a home or stocks and with little capacity to absorb higher gasoline prices."

Economists also say low-wage workers were hit particularly hard by an increase in Social Security payroll taxes resulting from "fiscal cliff" negotiations late last year between Obama and Congress.

A degree of economic "self-righting" will happen as more middle-income and higher-income jobs come back and economic growth accelerates, said Robert Trumble, director of the Labor Studies Center at Virginia Commonwealth University. "But the situation we've been facing for the last half-dozen years or so has been tough. And the lower your income, the tougher it is."

"Some things are better. But there are still some things that are still hard," said Sarah Mueller, 33, of Palm Harbor, Fla., who found work as a Montessori teacher two years ago after working as a part-time and substitute teacher. "With student loans, people are still struggling ? I'm one of those people ? to pay back student loans that are astronomical," she said.

Seventy-four percent of lower-wage workers say it is "difficult" or "very difficult" for them and their families to get ahead financially. Half thought their financial situation was somewhat or much worse than in 2008.

Many worry a lot or some (71 percent) about being unable to pay their bills, unexpected medical expenses (70 percent), losing their job (54 percent) or keeping up with their mortgage or rent (53 percent).

Many reported stagnant (44 percent) or declining (20 percent) wages over the past five years.

Employers and workers tend to agree that employees themselves hold the bulk of the responsibility for helping workers to get ahead in their careers, but employers are more apt to place some of that responsibility on high schools and colleges.

Despite their many frustrations, 74 percent of low-income workers said they were very or somewhat satisfied with their jobs. Yet 90 percent of all workers said they were satisfied with their job, according to an AP-GfK poll conducted in September.

The surge in low-wage jobs seems to have escaped notice by employers, the survey suggests. Just 22 percent of them said their organization's lower-wage workforce grew over the last four years and only 34 percent expect it to increase in the coming four years.

Lower-wage workers are also pessimistic about the overall direction of the country, with 7 in 10 saying "wrong direction," above the 60 percent of all adults who said so in AP-GfK polling conducted at the same time.

"Lower-wage jobs are coming back first," said labor economist Heidi Shierholz of the Economic Policy Institute, a labor-leaning think tank. "But it's all bleak and it's all due to lack of demand for work to be done. We're still not getting more than just what we need to hang on," Shierholz said. "These last few months have looked better, but we cannot yet claim robust recovery by any stretch."

Lena Hughes, 31, of Indianapolis, a certified hospital nursing assistant, would agree.

"Everybody is struggling financially. It's hard to get jobs still," she said. "I don't think it's getting any better."

The surveys were sponsored by the Joyce Foundation, the Hitachi Foundation and NORC at the University of Chicago. The Joyce Foundation works to improve workforce development and education systems to assist job seekers who may lack skills or credentials. The Hitachi Foundation aims to expand business practices that improve economic opportunities for less well-off workers while benefiting business.

The worker survey was conducted online using the GfK KnowledgePanel and by telephone by interviewers from NORC from Aug. 1 through Sept. 6, 2012. The employer survey was conducted online and by phone by NORC from Nov. 12, 2012, through Jan. 31, 2013. The margin of sampling error for the survey of workers was plus or minus 2.9 percentage points; for employers, it was 4.5 points.

Five Tax Tips: Past, Present, Future - Midlife Finance

?Doing income taxes sucks,? announced Daughter #1. I agreed with her, then?resisted the urge to add sarcastically, ?Welcome to adulthood.?

doing income tax sucks? If you?ve been Johnny-on-the-spot and kept careful records every month all year long, feel proud ? and smug. Tax preparation should be fairly easy for you. If, on the other hand, like most of the civilized world, you?ve had good intentions ever since last April 15, but not a lot of follow-through there?s work to do. Here are some tips that should help ? not just for 2012, but in the future. (Warning:?I?m not a tax professional. If you have any questions, run them by an accountant or other income tax specialist. Or call the IRS.)

*File for free.?If your AGI, or Adjusted Gross Income, is less than $57,000, you can do your taxes online for free. Thanks to an arrangement with the IRS, 15 different companies are offering their fill-in forms, plus help. For no cost! (Your age or state residence may also get you in on this program. An estimated 70% of the U.S. population can qualify.)??Find out more here.?

*Credit cards can be helpful for cataloging last year?s business expenses?? even if you haven?t kept specific track during the year. Every time you?ve stopped for something eat while on business ? it?s deductible. Every time you purchased paper, ink or shipping tape for the business ? deductible. And where will these purchases show up, even if you?ve lost the receipt??On your credit card statement.

*Mileage may not seem like much ? but it adds up.?Here are the 2012 rates from the IRS:

  • 55.5 cents per mile for business miles driven
  • 23 cents per mile driven for medical or moving purposes
  • 14 cents per mile driven in service of charitable organizations

2013 rates are a cent more for business and medical/moving expenses ? but the same for volunteer service.

Use credit card receipts to remind yourself where you?ve traveled on business ? or for appointments. (Mapquest.com is a big help here. From now on, resolve to keep a small notebook and pen in your vehicle, from now on, to record mileage numbers.) If you have a regular volunteer commitment (say, nursery duty at your church every other week, or helping out at the local food pantry), check your calendar, then Mapquest ? voila, mileage!

*Donated items also add up.?That old quilt, painting or set of dishes from your grandmother could be a valued item to a charity. If you?re not sure of value, the easiest way to find out is to visit a qualified appraiser. There are a number of national groups that can help ? quilts and other textiles, for example, are well handled by members of PAAQT (Professional Association of Appraisers ? Quilted Textiles). A Google or other word search should bring similar groups up quickly.? (Ask questions ? appraisers should be more than willing to provide certifications, training and other credentials. Look for the words ?certified,? as well as the magic phrase from the Appraisal Foundation ? ?USPAP.?)?Professionals? appraisal fee, by the way, is also tax-deductible.

If the value of your piece is $500 or less, technically you don?t need an appraisal ? but if it?s valued at $5,000 or more, you definitely do. Keep an eye on the calendar, though ? the appraisal must be done?60 days or less before the actual donation, according to the IRS. (The IRS? Form 8283 should answer any other questions you might have.) It?s too late for 2012 ? but perfect timing for this year. (Note: I know this area well, having been a personal property appraiser for years, and a member of PAAQT for more than a decade.)

Public charities can benefit from smaller-value items, as well. Gently-used items like clothing, CDs and books can really add up, when you?re donating a bagful or two. Check with your local thrift shop, library, senior center or other charitable group for what they?re interested in ? and what they?re not. (This writer does not, however, suggest that you, like then-Arkansas governor Bill and wife Hilary Clinton, donate your used underwear, at $2 a pop!)

*Age 50 or older??AARP not only has trained volunteers waiting for your call; they?re also willing to meet with you. This article not only gives you specific info, but offers up ten tips for tax deductions you may not have thought of.?Case in point: long-term care insurance premiums. According to AARP, the older you get, the more you can deduct. For ages 40 or under, the maximum claimable amount is $350; 41 to 50, $660; 51 to 60, $1,310; 61 to 70, $3,500; 71 or over, $4,370.

?? And if you can?t finish in time? There?s always the opportunity for file for an extension. Good luck ? it will soon be over.
