Position Description: The University of Colorado Denver is seeking nominations and applications for the position of Senior Network Engineer. The Senior Network Engineer provides advanced networking skills to the Telecom and Network Infrastructure group in the Information Technology (IT) Services department of the University of Colorado Denver | Anschutz Medical Campus and to University Information Systems (UIS). The Senior Network Engineer is responsible for providing reliable, available, maintainable data networking on two University of Colorado campuses, UIS, and multiple offsite business locales.

The Senior Network Engineer is responsible for driving and delivering network design and architecture to support university infrastructure and services, including all IP network infrastructure. The Senior Network Engineer provides expert-level expertise, experience, and knowledge in creating advanced networking architectures, developing routing and switching configurations, designing LAN and WAN connectivity, and securing university network resources. The Senior Network Engineer is a top-level individual contributor with an exceptional level of expertise. The successful candidate will be a senior authority in core, distribution, and edge networking.

Additional Posting Description: The main job duties of the position include:

  • Plans, designs, and optimizes high-level layer-1 through 7 network infrastructure
  • Approves and modifies network design, architecture, and implementations in the technical areas listed above and takes advantage of emerging technologies
  • Determines and corrects the most highly complex network problems
  • Evaluates and recommends new products
  • Serves as a technical resource person for coworkers and customers, including network management, systems administrators and architects, and CU Denver | Anschutz research faculty
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
  • Advanced knowledge in network architecture and topology
  • Expert knowledge on routing and switching networks
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously from inception through completion
  • Possesses superior skills in technical project planning, communications, and creating written documentation
  • Ability to work collaboratively and collegially with the university's faculty, staff, and students and other IT Services and UIS staffers
  • Ability to lead problem-solving efforts when solving complex problems
  • Ability to carry a pager and periodically work flexible hours

Required Education/Experience/Skills (Minimum Qualifications):

  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor's degree in computer science, management information systems, engineering, or a closely related field
  • Substitution: full time, professional-level work experience in enterprise-class networking may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for the bachelor's degree, up to 4 years
  • 5-years progressive experience in networking, with 3-years' experience in routing and network architecture using BGP, OSPF, EIGRP, IGRP, or other RFC-based routing protocols
Desired Qualifications:
  • Master's degree from an accredited college or university in computer science, management information systems, or IT security-related advanced degree
  • 10-years progressive experience in networking, with 3-years' experience in routing and network architecture using BGP, OSPF, EIGRP, IGRP, or other RFC-based routing protocols
  • Current Cisco certification (CCNA, CCNP, or CCIE)
  • Extensive and broad high-level network knowledge beyond CCNP that pertains to many specialties
  • Extensive knowledge of computers, programming languages and principles
  • Networking experience in an enterprise-class higher education or governmental environment
  • Advanced knowledge of optical networking design and architecture.
  • Advanced knowledge of physical network infrastructure and components
  • Working knowledge of QOS and Multicasting in a large campus environment
  • Experience transitioning from IPv4 to IPv6 networking
Special Instructions to Applicants: The salary range for this position has been established at $75,000 to $102,000 and actual salary is negotiable commensurate with experience.
