St. Paul Rally Backs President Obama's Gun Control Legislation

St. Paul, MN (NNCNOW.com) - Several Minnesota leaders are calling on the state's congressional delegates to support President Obama's gun control legislation.

A rally held Monday in St. Paul came on the eve of the President's State of the Union Address.

Community leaders and concerned citizens delivered their own State of the Union address on the importance of tackling gun violence, in the wake of recent shooting tragedies like Sandy Hook.

The proponents of gun control say more needs to be done, pointing to stats that show 33 people are gunned down in the United States each day.

Speakers at Monday's event included St. Paul Mayor Chris Coleman and Jane Kay with the One Million Moms for Gun Control.

"The state of our union is bereaved, shocked and horrified, by the problem of gun violence," said Rabbi Amy Eilberg with the University of St. Thomas.

"Instead of asking whether every single life will be saved, ask if one life could have been saved," said Kay.

The rally also follows a series of House committee hearings in St. Paul focusing on a number of gun control bills that featured passionate testimony for and against gun control.

The Senate is also expected to take up a number of bills in the coming weeks.

Opponents of gun control legislation say the proposed legislation is an infringement on their 2nd Amendment rights.

The president is seeking universal background checks for gun purchases, plus a ban on the sales of semi-automatic, military-style assault rifles.
